    Insulation resistance on a transformer

Is it possible to damage a transformer by doing an insulation test without disconnecting it first. It is one of those large-ish wire wound transformers used on a 12v Wire Track Lighting System, because this is what I did & the cb trips when I turn the light on. Its on a two way light switch. Not...

    Isolator switch terminals

Bought a 32A 4 pole isolator switch. Using it on a single phase. The terminals are marked up L1, L2, L3 & N on one side & T1, T2, T3 & N on the other. Do I use L1 & N as the supply & T1 & N as the load, or the other way round, or doesnt it matter. Cheers.

    Log cabin...... again

Using this little tool here - http://www.pandpelectrical.com/mpm/voltcalc.htm 35mm SWA should do the trick with the design current at approx 65A

    Log cabin...... again

When the cabin is finished my mate is going to live in it until his house is built. Its got the usual bits & bobs, washing machine, fridge/freezer, oven/hob in the kitchen & water is heated by an immersion. DNO wont fit a supply unless we dug up a 3ft thick concrete slab which wasnt happening.

    Log cabin...... again

Spent a couple of days digging the trench for the cable to the log cabin. Measured it & it is 120meters, take a few metres, from where we are getting the power from. Calculated it & if I use 25mm SWA over this distance with a 50amp design current it gives a 9v drop. Would you say this is ok &...

Advice req'd to power log cabin

I reckon I'll probably use a 16mm cable which is rated at 78 amps (in the TLC book). A 63A MCB will do the job but say I wanted to protect the cable at 70A or I wanted to use a bigger cable. What would you do then?Looking about I cant see any suppliers selling bigger MCB's than 63A.

Advice req'd to power log cabin

Cheers for the advice. The electrician doing the work is a friend of the family & he's giving me a chance to get some experience. JohnD - I looked on the TLC site & found that Wylex unit, anyone got any other suggestions, must admit it does look a bit big....

Advice req'd to power log cabin

Contacted the DNO & they have said about 10 weeks before they can start the job & then they wanted the trench dug in a specific place which would have been almost impossible because it was right through the middle of a 3ft thick concrete slab. I've already checked about cutting the fuse seals...

Advice req'd to power log cabin

As I've said before I'm helping a mate build his log cabin so he can live in it. The electrician has just got to come back for 2nd fix. The power for the cabin is going to be taken from a board about 50m away in an old workshop - Here is a picture of it. Its got a 100A main fuse. How would...

Supplemental bonding in bathroom (again- sorry!)

I've got a similar setup to you with a combi boiler in the airing cupboard outside the bathroom. I took a 4mm cable from the bathroom light via the loft, down to the combi pipes & then cross bonded them all.

Can I bond to an external gas meter

If I bonded it where it entered the house it would be under the floorboards & not visible for inspetion, so I'll have to do it in the meter box. I cant see anything in the regs saying "The connection cant be made externally" Cheers :D

    Today, I............

I suppose its not so bad when you got a house full of pendant lights but I think all these fancy b&q lights are designed to be put up once & left alone. My fault I suppose for doing one of my assessments on an old house, but its good practice, all jobs cant be like this... Cheers

    Today, I............

Right, I've changed my CU for my assessment & I thought today I would test it all. Managed to get rid of the missus & kids for the day. I started off by turning all the power off then unplugging everything & then taking all the lightbulbs out. Started with the continuity of protective conductors...

My last question on supp bonding

Right, this is my last question on supp bonding cause I'm getting pi**ed off with the subject............. :? Need to get this right for my assessment. All copper pipes involved here, My bathroom has x1 towel radiator which you can only see about an inch of pipe because it goes into the...

Can I bond to an external gas meter

The meter box is on the side of my house. About 150mm out the meter the pipe splits, one pipe carries on down the side of the house & goes in through the wall where the oven is on the other side & the other pipe goes up the wall & goes in under the floorboards in one of the bedrooms which then...
