    Cables in the loft question

well yeah, I know... I gathered as much :D what I am saying is... apart from the massive cable tangle and the connections left unprotected like that, is there any other reason? I can take better pictures if it helps

    Cables in the loft question

Why is it a mess? I mean, provided that the connections are arranged in a box as they should be, would it still be a ****ty job? Could you elaborate on why? It's just for me to understand better

    Cables in the loft question

When I pointed out that the job is not up to standards, the builder just replied "we have done the exact same with so many other customers and none have complained. I don't doubt that most people would not even bother climbing in a very dusty and unpleasant attic to check how the wiring has been...

    Cables in the loft question

Next thing you know he was also not planning to provide minor works certificate  If he does not put this right, I am considering suggesting him to dismantle the stuff he has installed and call in a proper electrician and deduct the expense from the agreed price for the whole job...

    Cables in the loft question

OK, Just had a chat with the builder... it was supposed to be the finished work (electrics-wise) :censored:

    Cables in the loft question

Yeah, that is how I intend to approach the subject with my builder. If he says it is temporary, then I’m happy. If it’s supposed to be the finished work then I’ll point out why it’s not OK. I’m not competent enough to say if the wiring itself is done properly but at least the “cable management”...

    Cables in the loft question

There you go… It goes without saying that I also need to put the insulation back

    Cables in the loft question

that's what I suspected :( Tomorrow the builder is here again so I am going to have a chat with him. In case they try to claim it's OK like that, is there something that I can refer to to prove my point? I can do basic electrics but honestly when it come to regs I am not very well versed...

    Cables in the loft question

So, I am having a builder to redo my main bathroom and he has called-in a part p registered electrician (or so he says) to do the electrics. What has been done is: -fitting shaver socket -fitting LED downlights -fan and related isolator switch -fitting a switch (out of the bathroom) Now, today...

    Insulation under first floor bathroom

True... But that's why you have radiators upstairs. The radiators downstairs should heat just the rooms they are in, not the rooms upstairs as well. Otherwise you have the typical situation where downstairs it's freezing and upstairs it's too hot...

    Insulation under first floor bathroom

That was my thinking as well. I would expect that insulating the void between floor and plasterboard downstairs would make the rooms downstairs warmer...

    Insulation under first floor bathroom

I am having my bathroom redone and they have just lifted the floorboards. There are some areas under the floor that are not insulated so I have asked the builder what kind of insulation he was going to put in and he replied "none, it does not need insulation". The room below is also a bathroom...

Spotlights and shaver socket: notifiable work?

I've had a look at several discussions but I can't get my head around this. Before I have an unjustified argument with my builder, would you be so kind to clarify this for me? I'm having my bathroom redone and the builder has called-in an electrician to fit spotlights and a shaver socket. The...

Shed wiring (already connected to mains)

I guess my question then is: is there any difference between a permanent "hardwired" circuit and a non permanent "off a plug" circuit in terms or regulations?

Shed wiring (already connected to mains)

This page does not seem to agree with this: https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/partp.htm Installation of a socket in a garden shed Yes

Shed wiring (already connected to mains)

I thought that this would be a regulation workaround. As far as I know, I can't hardwire new stuff (lights OR sockets) in a shed as I'm not an electrician, but I thought that if the circuit is on a plug then it's a sort of grey area and it's not really considered notifiable work... am I wrong?

    Loft hatch positioning

Hi! I need to move my loft hatch to a different area of the loft. Provided that I don't cut any structural element, are there any areas that should be avoided? The roof is a trusses structure from the 70'

External wall blockwork - has my builder made a mess?

he's not a traveler, no :D Yeah that's pretty much what he's done. He has cleared what could be cleared with a vacuum cleaner and by hand. The rest that could not be reached he has pushed down with a batten. He has agreed to come back afterwards if there are damp problems to remove a few...

External wall blockwork - has my builder made a mess?

no they are still there. He will also use some sort of ties to link the new stretch of internal skin to the existing one. In the end it's just a 40cm stretch in a recess angle so I don't know how significant this mess is. The wall does not bear weight in that area, however, I don't want to have...

External wall blockwork - has my builder made a mess?

About tying it to the outer wall, could he just not reuse the ties that are still hanging from the brick wall? Also, should I set everything straight from the beginning and discuss about "who pays for this?" or should I wait until the whole bathroom renovation job is done?
