How do you find a quality roofer?

Re recommendations, I asked my neighbour who did her roof, which looked impressive, and she gave a name, then said it was sub-contracted to another company - who has a website and lots of nice pics. Emailed them and heard nothing back. The jobs looks great, but the subbie may have moved on...

How do you find a quality roofer?

Seconded above. I have just asked my council if they have approved traders (they do not). And many of the reviews (Google, Checkatrade, etc) are clearly fiction...

    Flat roof options

We have recently moved and the kitchen extension (maybe 25 square metres) has a grp flat roof which has started to leak. This was repaired, apparently, within the last 12 months. But if I look at it from the bedroom window the surface looks blistered and there are a couple of large puddles which...

    Radiator drain valve

Basic question. Just moved and some of my rads have attached. The drain uses a square head bleed key. Q: Does this bleed the rad or the pipework to the rad (or both if I fully open the valve) and is there a tool you can get to stop you loosening it and losing water before you can put a hose on it?

    Ferroli Optimax HE Plus 31C

Super call, guys. Thank you so much. Feel silly now but rads are heating up! I'll let daughter and landlord sort out a service/new boiler. Took the cover off to see where it was leaking, and it's in a couple of places, so not going to be cheap.

    Ferroli Optimax HE Plus 31C

Another update! I have hot water but no heating - just the bathroom rad, which is lukewarm. Does that mean a valve in the boiler is on the blink? I had thought the timer settings were overriding the central heating but have tried manual only, override, etc and it doesn't seem to make any odds...

    Ferroli Optimax HE Plus 31C

Update, opened knurled valves fully and mains came in, so sorted for tonight. Thanks for listening all. :-)

    Ferroli Optimax HE Plus 31C

Just noticed in that pic it has some pressure now, so tried it again and water's barely warm- which is an improvement to cold! I take it after pressure's resolved, the knurled valves should be fully clockwise? Thanks

    Ferroli Optimax HE Plus 31C

I kinda hoped if I opened both blue valves and opened the black knurled knobs that boiler would get mains pressure, but nothing seems to happen.:-(

    Ferroli Optimax HE Plus 31C

Hi Grandson-sitting at my daughter's for a few days and the heating and hot water have gone down. Looks like the boiler has no pressure. When I phoned daughter she said it leaks now and again and she just resets it. Tried that, obvs. :( How do I re-pressurise, please? Downloaded a manual which...

    Loft insulation

Thanks all. Topped up insulation on boarded area, as this had the least.

    Loft insulation

I would be increasing it on the non-boarded portion of loft. It depends on the insulation value of the board, hence the question.

    Loft insulation

I live in a 50s bungalow and the loft is quite well insulated, but there is a portion of loft down the centre which is boarded for access and storage. This has loft insulation on top of the boards where the storage space isn't used. This is probably better than boards only but I wondered if it'd...

    Painting loudspeaker casings

Thank you. Any special paint-primer recommendations?

    Painting loudspeaker casings

I have some large floormounted loudspeakers. Their frames are made of mdf and the finish is matt black - these panels are not polished. I would like to paint them cream or white or something lighter to suit the rest of the decor. Do I have to re-prime, or can I just plonk a wood paint on top...

    'fess up

I was working from home (no really) in my little office and one of those raspy flies started banging around the room and on the window - really irritating. So I had to give it a squish with whatever soft 'fly swatting tool' was to hand. In the office that was a windscreen protector which I...
