I have some large floormounted loudspeakers. Their frames are made of mdf and the finish is matt black - these panels are not polished. I would like to paint them cream or white or something lighter to suit the rest of the decor. Do I have to re-prime, or can I just plonk a wood paint on top with a roller. If so, any recommendations?

The paintwork doesn't have to be massively durable, but I'm trying to avoid it flaking or chipping.

Your thoughts most welcome.

Should be no problem but I'd suggest a coat of primer first to flatten out the black and help adhesion.
Try eggshell finish. Has a nice sheen without being glossy and I find quite durable.

Thank you. Any special paint-primer recommendations?

Dulux do a 'Difficult Surfaces Primer', though if you give the cabinets a light sanding first then standard primer should suffice. Don't just 'slap' it on or lightly coat. Apply it as though you are doing a finish coat and lightly sand down between all paint coats to key the surface for the next coat. Allow to dry thoroughly between coats to prevent patching or lift. Oh and make sure to remove all dust with a tac rag after sanding down.
