    Cable for Nest thermostat

Thanks for the quick reply. So if I go and get myself some 2.5mm T+E from Screwfix, can I safely use it for everything I need to do? I guess it's overrated for some of these things but that shouldn't be an issue? * Use two lengths to wire up Heat Link. One for permanent live/neutral and one...

    New shower, dealing with damp

This is the sort of drain thats already there, looks almost identical: http://www.tradingdepot.co.uk/DEF/product/!!MACTSG1T6SS!!/?gclid=CPv097nt3cQCFbQatAodXTYAQA Part of me wonders if I should have left it but I would have thought whatever type of tray we go for we would need a different one.

    New shower, dealing with damp

Since we moved into our new house, we haven't been able to use the downstairs shower. We knew it wasn't in great condition but only on closer inspection did we realise how bad it was. The grout was cracked and missing all over the place and there was mould and mildew everywhere. Thhe previous...

    Cable for Nest thermostat

I was hoping to go and buy a Nest thermostat tomorrow to fit to our heating system (system boiler, Y Plan setup). We don't currently have a room stat. I understand the wiring in the junction box in our airing cupboard and how the system works. The Heat Link box that comes with the Nest...

    Building my first stud wall

I'm about to start a little project to build out our existing chimney breast - the TV is already mounted on the chimney breast itself - a stud frame will enclose the chimney breast but leave a recess for the TV mount and a flex outlet for the power connection to the TV. Cables will be hidden...

    Dealing with high ground levels

A few photos. French drain: https://www.dropbox.com/s/59ockap0aeajqeu/Photo%2027-03-2015%2012%2002%2010.jpg?dl=0 New air brick: https://www.dropbox.com/s/eodqx4gv418d9js/Photo%2027-03-2015%2011%2013%2009.jpg?dl=0 Replaced air brick...

    Dealing with high ground levels

Another follow-up - we decided to proceed with the french drain to the side of the property only. The concrete path has been cut back about a foot away from the house and dug down a few courses below the DPC, lined with a weed membrane and back-filled with pea shingle. I have to say it looks a...

Wiring Nest thermostat, no existing room stat

Brilliant, thanks a lot for that stem. Now I just need to make my mind up on the stat. I've ruled out Evohome - looks great but a bit pricey for our needs. Its a toss up between Nest and Tado to be honest.

Wiring Nest thermostat, no existing room stat

No offence, but I didn't ask for an opinion on the Nest, just the wiring. I realise Nest isn't the only option out there and I haven't 100% settled on it and have considered Evohome amongst other things. Whatever room stat I choose to fit, I'd presumably have to wire it up in a similar...

Wiring Nest thermostat, no existing room stat

Yes, I realise this - I mentioned that in my original post. I could also run appropriate cable from the T1/T2 terminals in the Heat Link from the airing cupboard down the same route as the wire to the boiler under the stairs and wire it up to that if I want as well but I will probably just plug...

Wiring Nest thermostat, no existing room stat

We've just bought our first home and it currently has no room thermostat. The heating and hot water is controlled solely by an old Drayton LP112 programmer in the airing cupboard and TRVs on all the radiators (apart from the towel rails in the bathroom and downstairs shower room). I'd like to...

    Dealing with high ground levels

Well, I just spoke to the builder who had quoted me to do the job. After saying I didn't think we needed to run the drain around the front as it already had a chemical DPC, he offered to do the side, fit our porch lintel and a few air bricks for £300 all in so I've decided to go for it. He said...

    Dealing with high ground levels

So to sum up, if no major signs of dampness on internal walls, nothing much to worry about? Regarding the spalled bricks, is it likely due to bad pointing, water getting into bricks and then freezing, blowing off the face? Replace them and jobs a goodun? And don't bother with French drain...

Re-doing our shower, fitting shower tray

So my wife has spoken to her Dad and his opinion is to not bother messing around with shower trays (he thinks the easy plumb kits with adjustable feet are rubbish) or building out the walls, but simply do a tiled base like we already have, but do it properly. I need to speak to him but he...

    Dealing with high ground levels

It is cavity wall although if I'm understanding this correctly, the high ground level means that rain can bounce off the path and reach the bricks above the DPC (which is only one course high) thus bridging the DPC that way. Is that correct? That said, what you are saying makes sense - if the...

Re-doing our shower, fitting shower tray

Hi, I was wondering if I could get some advice on the best way to prepare our downstairs shower for tiling (my father in law will be tiling for us). The shower room is approx. 2x1m and with the shower at one end. Two walls are external, the third an internal wall between the shower and...
