    Rainwater drainage

I’ve had the house with this setup more than 15 years. It’s been fine never once had a problem with it in terms of draining rainwater. The sewer end has a U bend on it so there’s no way it can come back up. If the grid on top blocks it overflows into the sewerage. The drain did block once it...

    Rainwater drainage

It’s a completely new building. 6m x 9m with a flat roof. I just want to get rid of the water that lands in the roof and ends up in the guttering. I had a look at how it is done on the house and there is a trap that catches the gutter output with a little notch in it so that if it blocks it...

    Rainwater drainage

Hey forum, I am interested to know what is the correct way to manage rainwater for a build that I am working on. Can I get some general advice and guidance on what to do with the water that the gutters collect please? Many thanks

Digging foundations and raising ground level

No, I am saying the clay that will come out of the foundations will be safe to put into the center section of the foundations. The bit that will be under the floor. The inspector hasn't been round to look yet but the pilot hole will be 1m deep so I am assuming thats how deep the rest will be...

Digging foundations and raising ground level

I haven't decided if I want the surrounding ground to be turfed or paved yet. Most likely will do a small area as turf and rest paved. Yep. Once you get a about a foot down it becomes clay. Surely the clay is OK to go in the middle of the foundation rectangle? There will be a pathway going...

Digging foundations and raising ground level

Dear forum, I am about to start digging the foundations for a building (7m x 9m) and could do with some advice on what to do with the soil that is dug out. The location makes it very difficult to get rid of the soil. We had to raise the height of the garden by about 8 inches in order to...

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

Really it comes down to the age old Cost / Quality / Time triangle of project management. In this instance I have a major constraint on cost and literally need the cheapest option. It doesn't matter if it takes a long time but I cannot let the quality slide. I don't mind putting in the work. My...

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

This is my point. I can manage extraction of 1m per week. Its the most cost effective option. But don't want things going wrong.

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

He wants £16k for the dig and concrete pour. The quote wasn't itemised so I don't know how much was on what etc.

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

I had an initial chat with the inspector. He said to the pilot hole to 1m and he will advise based on what he sees and the design etc

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

Not a good idea to plywood it up then? I would prefer to do it bit by bit over time as that way I can gradually get rid of the muck that comes out. Its in a difficult place to get rid of the soil that comes out so this is preferred. A digger isn't really suitable here for this reason.

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

Yep I have paid the inspector for this. He will come around to look at the pilot hole in the next few weeks.

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

Yep it will be brick built. Mainly because this is my preference, for various reasons.

Odd question about foundations but quite relevant to this project

Hey forum, I am building a garden office which will be 7m x 5m. The quote my builder gave me for the foundations was £££££'s so I am looking to reduce costs. I can handle a spade and a pick axe and have a van so considering digging the foundations myself. Yes I know it will be a lot of hard...

    Railway Sleeper Bench Treatment

Im thinking to fill the cracks with something dark, black ideally then stain the rest of it dark brown so will need to fill most of (if not all) of the cracks. Ideally something that I could pour over it that will sink in and harden with a waxy finish...

    Railway Sleeper Bench Treatment

Hmm interesting. Can you give me a link to this epoxy filler pls? Is it a wax based filler? Not like epoxy resin surely?

    Railway Sleeper Bench Treatment

Hey Forum, I made a railway sleeper bench last year and she isn't holding up against the elements too well. I gave her a surface treatment with some cuprinol fence stain (had a leftover bucket from doing the fence) for but it isn't enough to keep the cracks in the wood from widening. Just...

    General Foundation Digging Query

Dear forum, my builder has quoted me too much money to dig the foundations for an outbuilding that I recently gained planning permission for and I am considering digging them myself. Have never done anything like this before. The building is 5.5m wide, 8.7m long and 2.45m high. It will be built...

    Inflatable hot tub insulation

Forgive me for stating the obvious but if you read my post you will understand that the goal is to insulate. This means to prevent heat loss. Rockwool is used for insulation. That means it stops heat loss. Heat will be lost upwards, downwards and to the sides. I have calculated that this hot...
