New Business Advertising - Where What and How ?

The business will be 3 fold. Heating and boiler repair recovery (power flush). Domestic electrics. Handyman (mainly just to earn some money). I will also market myself to the estate agent and landlord market seperately. I am mainly interested in how people have got the public phoning...

If you can't have a wind-up what's the point in talking to people. Love, laughter and kids are what matter in life imo.

I hope your plumbing/gas advice is better than your fashion sense, I bet your popular with ladies of a certain age.

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

My employer is taking the opportunity caused by the recession to move our highly profitable plant to eastern europe so it will be even more profitable. The fact that we have been the most efficient, highest quality and best safety plant in europe is irrelevant. As they said, it is all down...

Thanks Alan. I am also an Alan. I am fortunate that I have an uncle who is self employed and a few friends who are self employed CORGI fitters so getting the work Ex shouldn't be a problem. I hear what you are saying about the experience I would get from working for a company and agree in an...

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

LEakydave, couldn't agree more, after 17 years in industry I am still learning, and I dont care who from. One of the first things I will be doing is going on ANY manufacturers courses that are free or reasonably priced. Like everyone points out, I will have plenty of time LOL.

Two zone valves working opposite ways

It seems strange to switch it all around 60c. With no dead band you could end up with regular switching of valves if the water temp hangs around 59 to 61c. In industry we would normally design the system to switch with a dead band of 5 to 10 degree c to minimise to possibility of cyclic...

    baxi boiler 105e

Does the tap neon light when you open your hot water tap ? If it doesn't do the following. Without going into too much detail try running all of your hot taps at once and see if this "activates" your boiler when on hot water only.

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I am aware of the costs involved - not cheap by anyone's standards. And without wanting to sound arrogant I suspect most of it will be wasted time. What I need to experience fitting and fault finding. Having someone teach me about primary combustion and boyles...

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

Kirkgas, thanks for the post. I fully agree with what you say about new entrants and the percieved lack of respect for the trade. Trust me when I say that I have total respect for the gas trade and the high standards that are expected, that is largely why I want to be a part of it. In my...

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

Yep. There is definately alot of "don't want any more competition" replies. :o That seems to be the problem with prefessions. Thanks for the replies guys, I was hoping for a few more responces to the original post and not just a "you can't do it" responce but that is fine, I understand. I...

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

Golfspoon, That is my logic also. The experience obviously gives you speed to do a faster job and thus make more money, however my experience and many others of builders in general is that the customer service can often be very poor. I accept my experience will slow me down but if I get the...

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

leakydave, thanks for the reply. I don't expect it to be easy, I expect 2 years before earning a salary to not choke at. But coming from a shift job, the simple idea of sleeping at night makes it worthwhile. Like I said I do have family and friends in the business so this should give me a...

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

I think the route to a sucessful business is versatilty, especially in a recession., Yes you are right, my electrical base is a start which is why I will be getting the part P, but the gas reg will also put another string in my bow. And yes you are right - no experience. However my experience...

Retraining to Boiler Engineer - any advice ?

No that's not the case. And neither do I think starting a business in a recession will be a doddle either. But like I said I am being made redundant and this is the path I am choosing. I have family who are self employed of varying trades and a few friends who are gas fitters, so I know what to...
