    Masonry joist pockets

Joist ends are wrapped. It's a cavity until the row of bricks above the joists which are laid as header bricks across the inside and outside cavity walls. That's why the bricks around the joists were all able to fall out without the rest of the wall coming down. I'll add the mastic and make...

    Masonry joist pockets

I'm replacing the joists in a downstairs bedroom and on one wall the bricks around the joists had fallen out. I've put the new joists in and now need to replace the bricks that sit next to the ends. Should the bricks be tight to the joists or should there be a gap? Some on the other side have...

    Wonky mitre saw

Thanks everyone - the saw isn't out on that angle it's out on the bevel angle. Some of the cuts seem to start off straight then curve at the bottom of the piece. I've had the square on the deck and checked the blade and it looks fine until it's used.

    Wonky mitre saw

When I first got it the cuts were straight. This time last year I did the skirting and picture rails in my dining room and noticed it was cutting wonky. I've been replacing joists in a downstairs bedroom and the cuts are now really out. I've borrowed something else now and am using that to...

    Wonky mitre saw

I'm having a problem with my Rage evolution mitre saw and am scratching my head a bit with it. Every cut I make ends up with a slight angle to it, like I've set it to an 85 degree cut or something. I've put a set square on it and it's at 90 degrees the whole way down and only seems to go wonky...

Already done and no trips last night or this morning. Thanks everyone

    Electrics tripping

No idea. I didn't take the floor up because it's tiled I just pulled the cable out. The amount of cable that was under there was quite a bit more than the distance it had to travel so I don't think it was tight to the joists.

    Electrics tripping

Yeah but it's been in four years. It was about halfway along the cable between the two.

    Electrics tripping

Under the floor. Looks like the cable had a nick in it (there was a small flap of plastic that I pulled off). Can only assume it had been like that since it was installed but I would have thought it would have given trouble before now?

    Electrics tripping

I think I got sidetracked by the flickering lights when the seat was on. I've bought a new FCU and will try to fit tomorrow afternoon. I needed one anyway because I managed to crack the faceplate at the weekend when investigating it. I've got quite a lot of t&e in the loft so might just...

    Electrics tripping

The big problem with inspecting anything is that most of the electrics apart from that board are encased in a jelly like substance for waterproofing. I can't see the back of the board where the power supply connects and most of the rest of the components can't be got at without destroying things.

    Electrics tripping

Nothing. The shower is not electric.

    Electrics tripping

I had my kettle plugged into the socket last night and made a few cups of tea without issue. I found some 'damage' to several of the solder points on one of the pcbs in the toilet last night. It looks like some brown liquid has started seeping out of them. I tried to get a photo but the pcb is...

    Electrics tripping

The heating element isn't removable as far as I could see. There wasn't anything obviously wrong with it although it's in water so I assume the bit I can see is not the actual element but a coil that it sits in. It was causing the flickering in use so both the heating and pumping were going on...

    Electrics tripping

It's a 10m extension reel plugged into a socket on the downstairs ring that's probably 3m from the CU in terms of the cable run.

    Electrics tripping

Plug is in a cupboard in an outdoor socket, no danger of getting any kind of fluid into it... I plugged the seat in to an extension cable this afternoon and so far it's been behaving. I did just notice an odd thing - whilst the seat is in use a halogen lamp in our living room started...

    Replacing joists

How much overlap do I need between the old joist and new section? I've got a load of radiator pipework right up against the last joist in the room and I'm thinking the easiest thing would be to cut the old joist before the pipe then move the pipes so they are behind the new bit of joist. If I...

    Replacing joists

This is all that was left of the horizontal board they were sat on. Aside from the high drive there was a lot of mortar piled against the base of the wall bridging the dpc along most of its length on the inside wall. If these weren't running under the living room floor I suspect it would...

    Replacing joists

Well I don't think these were doing too much... Only problem is that the joists run under the floor in the next room as well so I'm not replacing the whole length, just sistering new ends.
