    Central Heating not working

Andy this sound very much like a wiring / electrical control problem. Has the system ever worked correctly? Has anyone worked on it lately? Do you have / can you work an electrical multi-meter or if not are you confident testing for an electrical supply with a test light? Do you have a...

My oil central heating has stoped heating my hot water

Thanks for that numpty1. I've never personally come across one of those "Tapstat" things but it does sound favourite. Best do what numpty1 says coleaine but don't forget to check the "fill & expansion tank". ( It's easy and you, hopefully, won't get wet!!)

My oil central heating has stoped heating my hot water

I don't know anything about the valve near the tank that goes from 1 to 5 but I assume that it is some kind of thermostat. Maybe someone else can help on that one. As 75pete said, if you have an electrical cylinder thermostat, move it backwards and forwards and see if it "clicks". If it does...

Bathroom Mr David Hewstone, used to be in Orpington

Flippin' 'eck Agile! I bet that put you off!!! (Reminder for the relevant British Standards committee...make sure that all boilers face Mecca / Rome / Jerusalem / Amritsar??) It does remind you to remove the fuse and check the earthing of appliances though. I expect an electrocution could...

Dave, I'm near Cirencester. I don't do plumbing, just servicing oil boilers and cookers (AGAs etc) but as I'm of the Electrical faith and often a heating fault is notified as a suspect boiler, I get to do a bit of fault diagnosis but I try not too get wet!!

Died Agile? I thought that Plumbing and Heating Engineers just slowly went cold.......... :D

    New Oil Boiler time

I second Oilman on his advice to try to get away from combis if you can. They can work out costing a lot for repairs. Mind you, if you have natural soft water in your area you won't get many of the heat exchanger / limescale problems that I come across. A combi on hard water is a death wish.

Boiler only coming on for a minute, system problem?

As your hot water is OK this is a not so probable cause but have you checked that the ball-cock valve in the Fill & Expansion tank is working and that there is some water in the tank? If there is no significant hot water flowing, then the pipe near the boiler will get warm, due to heat...

    Electro Oil Sterling 50 Burner

So this bloke used two of his customers vacuum cleaners and filled the filters with soot. He made a mess of the job, which he obviously didn't understand and stated that he couldn't get spares for a Stirling burner. Be kind, maybe he's a failed Banker, Estate Agent or Financial Advisor. They...

    British Standard Question.

If you want information to design a system, rather than refer to lots of Standards, what about getting the "Domestic Heating Design Guide; ISBN 1 903287 40 5 (£24.50)?

Worcester Bosch Heatslave 15/19 Intermittent Lockout

Well done Steve. Yes the rotating oil valves can be confusing both the Atkins combined valve / filter / sight gauge, as fitted to tanks and the little manual "fire valves" operate the same way as a water tap. i.e. Clock-wise, from above, to close. They feel odd because the centre pin seem to be...

"Ticking" noise from mid position / 3 port valve (

Oh dear John! Sounds like a good plan though. Say goodbye to the week-end! Good Luck.

Worcester Bosch Heatslave 15/19 Intermittent Lockout

Well done Steve! If you've disconnected the fuel lines to the pump or checked it's internal filter (hopefully you did both) then you'll need to bleed the pump. Make sure that you have turned the oil back on after refitting the pump. Put a container under the pump, then, using an Allen key...

Worcester Bosch Heatslave 15/19 Intermittent Lockout

Steve, I've been thinking that Oilman could (yet again!) be quite correct. If the coupling between the motor and the pump has distorted rather than sheared, then it could be stalling the motor. Your judicial tap got it going again. Normally to get a motor going with a duff capacitor you have to...

1000ltrs of oil in 2 months???????????

mack, You have been given some good advice. We can tell you what your oil consumption should be provided that we know a) the boiler model (Camray 3 / Camray 5?) the burner make and model and the fuel nozzle size. To get the nozzle size you need to remove the burner from the boiler and read...

"Ticking" noise from mid position / 3 port valve (

John, Its a pain if you've bought a duff valve. Try taking the cover off of the head and watching to see if the motor is oscillating about the mid position. If it is, then it is one of the micro-switches or the associated resistor / diode network that's faulty. If so, try to swop out the...

    PAT testing?

Spark & Tim. Yes the earth continuity test for IT equipment, using the PAT4, is 200mV when there should be a maximum resistance, of the earth line, of 0.1ohm. The test voltage is applied across the earth pin of the connector and the metal chassis of the equipment. It is not applied across the...

Worcester Bosch Heatslave 15/19 Intermittent Lockout

Steve. Oilman is correct it did seem as though you were getting oil. I wanted to make sure that the oil was was clean and flowing well before we moved on. ( I've had a good few lock-outs during the cold spell caused by water in the fuel.) Now that you have heard the noise, probably of...

Worcester Bosch Heatslave 15/19 Intermittent Lockout

Eliminate Oil supply first. Making sure that you have a container underneath, if you have paper fuel filter elements, renew them, if you have plastic ones clean them. Check that there is no water in the filter bowl. Turn the oil off in the boiler & remove the filter from the fuel pump on the...

"Ticking" noise from mid position / 3 port valve (

See the similar postings John. The bad news is that it is usually a micro switches in the electrical head. One is supposed to cut the voltage down to about 90 volts to hold the valve in the mid position. If it is switching the power off instead (open circuit diode) the valve returns under...
