    Running doorbell cable

im going to change my doorbell from a wireless to a wired doorbell. Before boards and plaster go back on I’d like to run the cable. Any good and suggestions/advice please? I considered moving it onto the brick but unfortunately it’ll leave holes exposed on the UPVC frame where the last one was.

    Nest Hello video doorbell

I was tempted to use a nest cam iq outdoor on my front door but I'm not a big fan on having a CCTV pointing at the door so am considering a video doorbell instead. As the porch hasn't been plastered yet there's an opportunity to get it done now. What would I need in order to have one fitted? I...

Drilling a plate on an RSJ

So it's been pre-drilled along the "web" and the "flange" but the plate along the bottom cannot be drilled until it lines up with the bi-folds so therefore need drilling once it's in situ. I could be wrong but that's what I went for.

Drilling a plate on an RSJ

Got you, that makes sense. Structural engineer has specified a 203x102UB23 with a 250x6 Plate intermittent 6FW to UB (75 weld 100 gap) sat on pad stones/blues. Doesn't mean much to me though other than paying for the calcs and the cost of the beam and labour to fit it  With this in place...

Drilling a plate on an RSJ

Thanks John that's really good advice and I really appreciate it. Previous owners fitted a wooden lintel over a set of 3 meter bi-fold doors and I'm having the beam replaced as it's just not safe at all. How on earth people get away with it I don't know. Once the new RSJ is in position would you...

    Shower hose outlet

That’s perfect, thanks! I’ll pick up a couple and let the plumber know I want the flexible hose off and for him to use either of those instead and run it in copper. I had a feeling it wasn’t right what he’d done!

    Shower hose outlet

So I need a straight one of those by the looks of it as it has to get through 4" timber. I can't find those compression fixings in screwfix etc.

    Shower hose outlet

Thanks. Do you mean this sort of thing.... https://www.screwfix.com/p/endex-straight-tap-connector-15mm-x/82243 I have a feeling that he wanted to use one on the top shower outlet (drench head) but he said it wouldn't fit so had to use one of this instead which used a load of PTFE tape in to...

    Shower hose outlet

Yeah I thought so. It should be piped up in copper with a nut and olive on the back of it? How can it keep being tightened if it needs to locate in the right place in the shower?

    Shower hose outlet

So finally the bathroom that I’ve had lots of advice on is pretty fitted by my plumber and tiler. I’m concerned that his “silicone will fix it” answer is not the right response to this problems though but could you give me advice so I know it could/should be done please? He’s put a flexible...

    Replace Immersion Heater Element

One of my Oso Super S series immersion heater elements has broken (bottom one). I’ve bought the part and the correct box spanned. After switching off the power and turning off the mains water I’ve read it can be be replaced without draining whole tank. It sounds like I need need to release the...

    Preparing copper prior to solder

That’s great thanks. I’ve seen him apply a little flux after a solder and the use a wet wrag to wipe it off so that’s cool. Thanks for the input. Just glad it’s all good so far.

    Pipes in concrete floor

Ok, so a gas safe plumber has been round to assess the pipe work I wanted to run the plan past you guys for you input/opinion if that’s ok. The plan is for him to remove the 22mm gas pipe that’s sat on top of the two central heating and was buried under the concrete floor. To rerun it from the...

    Preparing copper prior to solder

Yeah paranoid a lot. Don't want any problems with it and I've always thought that prepping the pipes in this way was necessary with all pipes. Glad it's not :)

    Preparing copper prior to solder

Ahhh phew! So shiny new copper that hasn't oxidised etc will be fine just to flux and solder? Thanks for that :)

    Preparing copper prior to solder

Just a bit worried that I've seen the plumber (who's fitting my new bathroom) not using a abrasive strips on the copper or a deburrer on the inside of the fittings prior to soldering. Just asked him why and he said that as they are new they don't need it and his flux does the job. Any thoughts...

    Pipes in concrete floor

The go right across the middle of the kitchen. I have CH pipes with a Gas pipe on top. It's going to have Karndean (or similar) fitted on top.

    Pipes in concrete floor

I think buried in the floor is the only option to be honest. Not ideal but if protected correctly (how would you protect them) they will be fine unless a fitting lets go etc won't they?

    Pipes in concrete floor

Yeah ideally I don’t want the pipes back in the concrete but it looks like there little option here. Some people swear by denso take, others gaffa and then hessian lagging and others conduit/wrapping in pipe. Difficult to know what is best. Anyone got any advice on this please? Thanks
