Our local Council (Scotland) had part payment grants to replace lead pipework, maybe worth looking into if there is more to replace/change out. Co.

After shutting both valves, you could slacken off both fittings (place a old towel or similar round the base of the pipes to catch drips), lift the rad up & lay on packers on the floor. Then tighten the fittings back up & your all set to do whatever to your wall. I'm just about to do our hall...
