    Making this planter

Thanks all. I made my last (tiered) planter out of pine from Wickes which I treated with wood preservative and then decking oil. This time I plan to paint the planter a light to medium oak colour. Any problems with going for pressure treated timber from Wickes? Buying proper timber like red...

    Making this planter

I’ve seen this planter that I’m thinking of copying: Taken from here: https://www.prettyplanter.co.uk/product/long-hexagonal-planter I’ve worked out the frame is made from 44x44mm pine. The top “ring” is screwed together as you can see the screws. The other layers or rings don’t appear to be...

    Chopping up a tree stump

    So I measured it and it’s more like 70cm x 70cm x 70cm.

    Chopping up a tree stump

I’ll try and get a photo up. I’ve already removed the stump out of the ground. Just needed to cut it up into smaller pieces for transport. I’ve booked an appointment slot and it’s at the end of this month so I’m hoping to get the stump sorted before then. Don’t really want to wait as it’s taking...

    Chopping up a tree stump

I’ve managed to extract five tree stumps that had been left behind by the previous owners. Four of them were small and light enough for me to carry one at a time. The fifth one is too heavy to lift and needs two people. The local recycling centre won’t allow more than one person out of the car...

    Which SCMS to go for?

Not sure yet. I was planning on a raised bed/low retaining wall at the back of the garden, 30-50cm high. I looked into woodblocx as an alternative. The LS1019 is around £500-550 depending on which website I look at (annoyingly the ones I normally use don’t have it in stock). So that would be my...

    Which SCMS to go for?

I love my Makita cordless tools and was planning on buying the LS1019. Since it’s not battery powered, there’s no need to stick to Makita if there are better options out there. Mainly for small DIY and garden projects (cutting decking, making planters, not sure if I’d be able to cut oak...

    Pin Nailer

Did you ever get one in the end J&K? Any thoughts on the Hitachi?

    Buying a single fence panel

Don’t know anyone with a vehicle large enough. Sadly only one side is slotted. But good idea with decking boards. Have a circular saw so can use that. The gap is less than 4ft wide and the remaining panels are 4ft high not including gravel boards.

    Buying a single fence panel

I’ve cleared the back of the garden and there’s a gap about 4ft wide that was once occupied by a fence panel. Overgrowth of nearby bushes destroyed the fence panel. I’m after a standard waney panel, 4ft high, preferably with some sort of gravel board. Costs are high because it’s a single panel...

Any tips to get a better straight line?

I found frog tape was rubbish for me. I even used a wallpaper guide blade. I ended up using a 2” paintbrush and a steady hand. There was a good technique on youtube. Don’t load up with too much paint, apply enough pressure that the bristles splay out a bit and maintain the flow.

    Removing fitted wardrobes

The bottom panels just pulled up. They were just tightly fitted. The ceiling panels were screwed in. But I had to remove all of the interior shelves and dividers first. A bit like building the wardrobes but in reverse. the new wardrobes have the floors screwed in and covered with caps.

    Creating understairs frame

So SWMBO would like the understairs area to be converted into storage. She likes the idea of drawers and it'll be mainly her collection of cookery book as well as her other knick-knacks. This is the project I've stumbled upon: I want to make three vertical drawers and will remove the...

    Wireless doorbells

I loved the premise of this bell so I bought one a couple of years ago. The doorbell tones were rubbish and sounded like they’d been recorded off a cassette tape. More importantly I didn’t like any of the zillion tunes it came with.

    Installing a washing line pole

Yes. Galvanised and powder coated black. The shuttering was really for the top of the concrete to give a nice square finish. I’ll leave out the bag. What do I brace it to? I saw those pulleys on a different website. But SWMBO wanted a retractable washing line. Yes that was one of my concerns...

    Installing a washing line pole

So the previous owners had a washing line that was attached to the wall at one end and the garden shed at the other. Probably explains why the shed is leaning forwards by about 3° Anyway the hook in the shed fell out, taking the barge board with it. I’ve decided to order a new pole and install...

    Bodging a plasterboard repair

In the kitchen, I noticed a bulge developing about two years ago. I tracked it down to a leaking sink basin and dodgy waste plumbing (flexible waste hose!). Both things are fixed. SWMBO now wants to me to tackle the kitchen ceiling. It's had time to dry out. Ideally, I'd get someone in to...

    Raised wooden planters?

Similar to above - wood preservative and then decking oil. Used black plastic pond liner sheets that I cut to size and stapled to the inside of the planter.

How do you store your power tools?

I store mine in the garage. I don't do enough DIY work that they need a special way of storage, and the garage with all the rubbish in it doesn't have the space for a workbench. I buy the MAKPAC cases and plastic liners off ebay or similar. It means I can stack the tools up and it's easy enough...

Reattaching curtain batten without removing it

I wish I’d known about this earlier. Then again I didn’t have an SDS drill at the time either. Feels like the batten is solidly affixed. I now plan to use frame fixers for the two rooms that don’t have curtain battens (previous owners used blinds inside the aperture).
