    need a builder (manchester) to sort out a chimney breast.

    Can anyone recommend me builders in the manchester area. Only a smallish job. Victorian house, want to open up fireplace (which has been botched over the years) & need a lintel putting in, so basically restoring it to original & it will obviously need plastering over to finish the job.

    nick. I've looked up the inside & there's no lintel i can see. So this basically means that the support is coming from the breize blocks that have been put in? right?

    Just starting on re-installing a victorian fireplace (will be a working fire) and started pulling plaster off. There was a gas fire fitted sometime in the 60's I guess. The original hole has been built up with breize blocks & I was expecting to find a lintel of some sort, or a brick arch, above...

    Restoring old pine

    I'm currently stripping down the wood from various parts of the house. Its victorian era pine; I'm wondering what is the best way to finish it off now that it is free of paint. Should I oil, wax or varnish? What are the pros & cons? Is one better than the other in terms of durability...

    Paint removal

    always use a heat gun then treat with stripper solution, then sandpaper. Why can't you remove doors? You will presumably get a much better job done if you do......

    Are you sure your using the heat gun correctly? What type is it? I've recently been doing the same and it takes about 1-2 hours to strip a door and they are the original pine doors (about 120 years old)

    yeah the first one was thinned. Whats the best way of removing paint from plaster? Theres a few patches where the paint is intact, the rest of it I've now taken off. Do you think I should treat the plaster in some way before i re-paint?
