No.....you cannot use a any domestic dimmer for long term control of a ceiling fan.... Use a dedicated fan controller.

That made me laugh... :D Varilight sell a 'nursery' dimmer that will slowly dim to off over a fixed period...designed for use in childrens rooms but sounds good for your situation.

What Varilight dimmer did you purchase? The code will be on the packaging....

Varilight master dimmer and 2 slaves.....job done :) Oh.. and the dimmers are set up so that when they are 'right down', there will still be light with which to see....

which will also mean replacing the slave....so probably won't save money. As it was working fine originally I would suggest the problem is with the master..

To be fair...if you want to regulate the speed of a ceiling fan, the clue is in the name..... :D

standard dimmer switches cannot be used to control ceiling fans...... fan controllers can.... the initial start up of a sweep fan will put stress on the dimmer and soon it WILL fail fan controllers incorporate a start up capacitor to cope with the initial sweep.
