Extending the cable that goes into the consumer unit

I need to extend the big black cable that goes into the consumer unit so I can move it higher up the wall. I need to extend it by about 1 metre. The cable is rubber coated and contains 4 big wires, yellow, red, black and blue I think. Is this quite a simple job for a professional electrician or...

How many screws per timber-to-timber joist hanger?

I think they're deffo trimmers then! I'm taking loading from the joists to support a stud partition wall that runs parallel to the joists.

How many screws per timber-to-timber joist hanger?

The joists span about 8 feet from the wall to an RSJ that goes across the room. The interval or spacing is approx 40cm. The 'trimmers' are therefore about 35cm long. The building control officer seem satisfied with my work but I've since realised that the door casings in the stud wall...

How many screws per timber-to-timber joist hanger?

The spacing between the joists is approx 30cm, so that's the length of each trimmer. Unless what I'm calling a trimmer is actually called something else in the correct parlance. I'm calling the crosspieces between joists (on which will sit a new stud partition wall that runs parallel to but...

Stud partition wall: fixing head plate to RSJ

If a stud wall runs parallel to an RSJ what is the usual method of fixing the head plate? Is there some sort of tie or other fixing available or do you screw into the RSJ?

How many screws per timber-to-timber joist hanger?

The timber is 7x2, the span of each joist is approx 30cm (they're trimmers you see). I called expamet who make the hangers and they said use every hole! I was hoping to save a bit of time by using about 4 screws per hanger but I don't want the floor to collapse. The screws I was planning...

Would 3x2 timber be ok for a stud wall if...

Thanks. Also, is there a way of fixing the head plate to an RSJ? The stud wall will be running parallel along the underside of the RSJ. The sill will be ok because I can screw it to the chipboard flloring and glue it but with the head plate that clearly will not be possible. The BCO...

Would 3x2 timber be ok for a stud wall if...

on one side of the partition was a wetroom (18mm ply + limestone tiles) and on the other side 12.5mm plasterboard? Or should I go for 4x2 for extra strength?

    Electric Hot Water System

Today I discovered that the flow rate into the flat is a very respectable 25 l/p. I'm still none the wiser about what this means for the various systems i'm considering, but I was mightily impressed anyway.

How do you find out the flow rate...

...if you live in a 2nd floor flat with no garden tap and all the pipes have been capped at floor level because of building work?

Notching joists tops for 40mm waste pipe?

I think holes are ok too, as long as they are towards the end of the joists and not in the middle where they would weaken the joists too much. You'll need to check with your building control officer to make sure though and s/he might insist that you reinforce the joists using steel plates or...

    Electric Hot Water System

Ta Chris. I spoke to a neighbour today who has a Redring Powerstream which feeds her shower, washbasin and sink and she says it's fine. Then she went on to say she also has a pump for the shower but Redring say that is not possible! I'm starting to think about something like the Pandora. I'd...

    Electric Hot Water System

Thanks for that Pete. Trouble is I'm going for a high-spec minimalist finish and I don't really want a plastic box in the shower! I thought about a Redring Powerstream for the bathroom but they only recommend their own shower kit which looks a bit plasticy to me, plus it takes 50A to run.

    Electric Hot Water System

Hello all :D. I'm in the process of modernising a 'compact' one bed flat (350sqft) and have removed the old water tank & cylinder because it was in the middle of the flat and I needed the space. Now I'm deciding on what sort of system to replace it with. I do not have a gas supply so it's...
