Does this new roof look ok?

Hi Dishman I never got a quote for interlocking large tiles because they were never an option for me. The original house has these small tiles and as the extension is clearly visible from the street using anything other than matching tiles would have looked awful. Cheers

Does this new roof look ok?

Thanks. I have some reservations about the finish on tops/edges on the flat roof section to which I think you refer. It doesn't look quite right. I've asked them to fit coping along those edges to give it a more consistent look. How do you think it should have been finished? Many thanks

Like for like under PD in conservation area

No takers for this one then? :) Ok, let me try again  If I took out those two horrid downstairs windows and replaced them with two UPVC sash windows side by side, would that be ok? They would be the same size, colour and material but sash rather than what they are now. Would...

Like for like under PD in conservation area

Hi there The pic below is of a house which is in a conservation area but the PD rights have NOT been withdrawn. The question all pertains to the ground floor front elevation At some point the original front was removed and a horrible shop front inserted. Then at some point the shop door...

Does this new roof look ok?

Hi I'm having an extension built. There are two small issues that I would really appreciate some reassurance on. 1) The first pic shows a dormer. The zinc valley seems really wide to me, ie it seems very prominent (aesthetically) and a little out of keeping with neighbouring properties. Is...

    Quick cold/warm deck question

Asking here because the roofing subforum always seems to be quite slow. In terms of flat roofs I understand a cold deck is when the insulation is below the deck and warm deck when above. Also that a cold deck needs ventilation and a warm deck doesn't. What kind of roof is it if you...

Is it worth insulating between the rafters?

    That's a good idea, thanks! :)

Is it worth insulating between the rafters?

Thanks, I understand what you all mean now :) One of the reasons I wanted to keep the loft space 'warm' was because I wanted to have a loft hatch from my master bedroom into this space. I'm worried that a loft hatch will then let cold air into my bedroom. Thanks again

Is it worth insulating between the rafters?

Thanks, point taken on the ventilation required through the loft space. But then what happens when you do a loft conversion? Then the loft space becomes habitable and heated and the health of the roof timbers is still maintained isn't it? My own loft conversion has a breathable membrane to...

Is it worth insulating between the rafters?

Sorry guys, I'm a bit unclear. The loft space will never be converted to living space but I do intend to use it for storage. I've read mixed reviews about tri iso. So would there be anything to be gained by insulating between the rafters or as LRC says should I just throw an extra layer...

Is it worth insulating between the rafters?

Hi I'm having a two storey extension built at the moment. It has a pitched roof. There will of course be insulation in between the ceiling joists but is there anything to be gained but adding celotex between the rafters? It's an Edwardian house and so on the whole not great for thermal...

    Cold deck flat roof

Hi there, could anybody kindly help with this? I've read that if you have a cold deck roof you must provide ventilation to prevent condensation. So I have a question about two different kinds of flat cold deck roofs 1) Cold deck flat loft conversion dormer roof. So there is a flat roof...

    Some movement during extension work-ok?

Thanks Jeds, I'm not sure which my builders fitted the beams.

    Some movement during extension work-ok?

Aha! This is what the builder said had probably happened when I first noticed it. But I thought if that was the case it would have gone back to normal once the acros were removed.

    Some movement during extension work-ok?

Hi Tony The movement seemed to have happened BEFORE the steels went in ie when they were removing the wall and prepping it for the steel. It was supported by a technique that I think is called 'needling'? Two rsj beams were inserted through the wall upstairs and supported outside by acros...

    Some movement during extension work-ok?

Hi I'm having some 'major' work done on my 1902 built house including a double storey extension. Significant parts of the original supporting walls have been removed and steels put in. (and more of the same to come) All calcs were done by a structural engineer and going by past experience...
