Does this new roof look ok?

Hi

I'm having an extension built. There are two small issues that I would really appreciate some reassurance on.

1) The first pic shows a dormer. The zinc valley seems really wide to me, ie it seems very prominent (aesthetically) and a little out of keeping with neighbouring properties. Is this the usual way to do it?






2) The second pic shows where two planes of the roof meet. The join is not a straight line. It will of course be covered, but is there any issue with it not being completely straight?

Theres nothing wrong with either pic. The valleys a standard 4 1/2 inch / 5 inch valley. And pic 2 still has to have hips applied. The straightness isnt an issue as due to the cuts being hidden. Looks a decent enough job.

Cutting always looks rough til the ridge tiles are on, no point it being anything special.

Just make sure he strikes a line and gets the hip straight!

Valley is fine, that will need pointing as well. Some roofers don't though.

All looks very neat, dont worry about the evident cement dust etc, A few good downpours will get that off. The valley did not need pointing though, this only applies to single lap tiles. That said, it will be fine.

Just noticed the tops on the mansard, a builder has done this roof, rather than a roofer. They have a had a blood good go, but a roofer would not have finished the top like that, rest assured it should still be okay.

Thanks. I have some reservations about the finish on tops/edges on the flat roof section to which I think you refer. It doesn't look quite right.

I've asked them to fit coping along those edges to give it a more consistent look.

How do you think it should have been finished?

Not a bad effort at all. As said above it has been done by a builder.

I also point the valley, keeps small cuts in place better in my opinion. We all do things different.

Indus, out of interest, did you get costings for plain tiles only or did you look at the option for modern interlocking tiles too? If so how much more was this roof when costing it up? Planning my extention and would love to use plain tiles too.

Hi Dishman

I never got a quote for interlocking large tiles because they were never an option for me. The original house has these small tiles and as the extension is clearly visible from the street using anything other than matching tiles would have looked awful.
