Have you seen this tap ??

Hopefully I've included images of my tap. It is leaking from below the lever. I'm told that I need a new cartridge but can't get a new cartridge until I have identified the tap. The original installer cannot remember what the tap is. On the front of the lever is an 'R' and that is the only...

    Loft Insulation/Burner flue

The stainless steel(?) flue/trunking from my woodburner runs through my loft to exit the roof above. The loft is insulated everywhere except around where the trunking enters. I presume it is dangerous to insulate up to the trunking for fear of fire. Can someone confirm this please ? Thanks

    Noisy toilet refill

Thanks... Yes the toilet is connected to the mains. If the inlet came with a fittings kit it has been 'tidied' up by she who must be dismayed. I notice that in the valve itself there's a 'trumpet' shaped piece - narrow end at inlet, flared end towards the float - is it this that should be...

    Noisy toilet refill

I recently fitted a new syphon and new inlet pipe/valve (bottom fill) to my toilet. Since then, the noise of water rushing through the pipes has increased, when the toilet refills, over the noise level before. The syphon and inlet are standard - i.e. from B&Q. The inlet valve has a 'silencer...

    Tricity D9306 - Where's the thermostat ?

I keep a Tricity D9306 Fridge-Freezer in my garage. It is many years old and has, up 'til now been very reliable. However the fridge has ceased to cool (whereas the freezer is functioning OK). I've defrosted it (wasn't too icy) and cleared out the drain port in the fridge. I can hear the...

    Burning Tanalised timber ?

I've got some offcuts of tanalised timber from work in my garden. Is there any reason why I cannot chop this for kindling for use in my lounge woodburner ? I seem to remember being told that one shouldn't burn tanalised timber - can anyone confirm yes or no ? Thanks

    Buzzing Bulbs

I have replaced normal bulbs with energy saving bulbs in my hall. I have noticed that one or two of the new bulbs emit a buzzing sound. Can anyone explain why - do I have duff bulbs ? or what ? If it helps, the circuit does not have a dimmer. Thanks

    Ford Ka Heater

my daughter has a Ka Collection - year 2000. Recently the heater has started blowing only cold or slightly luke warm air. "It just happened" she said (!) So I've no idea whether this was preceded by e.g the water getting low/refill/airlock or what. Help please where do I start looking. If it...

VW Passat rear brake pad replacement

I've an X-reg 1.9 TDI Passat. I've been told that I need new rear brake pads. I'd quite like to do this myself (I've done front pads before OK). Is there anything especially tricky about Passat rear pad replacement ? Thanks

    Caps on or off ?

Thanks to all who replied. What I can't understand is that when the car is operating normally, the battery caps are on and the battery is being charged via the alternator - why don't all the reasons for taking the caps off when charging via a charger apply? Anyway its all academic now...

    Caps on or off ?

Thanks for the swift response. The battery may be as old as the car (2001) and the caps are not sealed, they are unscrewable to enable distilled water top-up. The charger is brand new with trickle or fast options (I'm using trickle).

    Caps on or off ?

I've a VW Passat whose battery needs charging. I've a Challenge Battery Charger. The Passat handbook says that the battery caps should NOT be removed during charging. The Charger handbook says the battery caps should be REMOVED during charging ! So, who is correct 'cos I'm confused (and is...

    Outside Junction box

I want to get electrics down to the bottom of the garden. I've just bought an MK outside Junction box - this to receive power from inside and give power via a 'tough sheath' cable outside. In the instructions that came with the box it says "In Junction boxes, four terminal blocks are provided...
