    Timber into web of steel

They are 33s so lighter per length but still a challenge to get in I'm sure.

Because the SE has rightly or wrongly, requested it.

    Timber into web of steel

My builder is about to start holding the back of the house up with a pair of 356x127 UBs. These will be bolted together however, the joists run to the wall so the plan is to bolt timber into the web with hangers on it to take the first floor. Due to the size of the beam and the fact that...

    Enlarging fireplace, no lintel

When I opened mine, there was a concrete lintel that I took out but it was lower than where I was putting a new one in. I cut through the mortar above it, inserted a steel into it and also 2 more steels either side to hold the throat of the chimney, and then knocked out the lintel below. Its...

    Decking flush with internal floors

I'm in the process of building an extension, and will be fitting bi folds with a weathered threshold. The extension continues the theme from the rest of the house in that there are suspended timber floors and air bricks throughout so need ventilation. I would like the decking to be flush or...

    Lintel above a bifold?

Thanks Tony, I was told that the RHS would be easier to conceal, birdmouthed into the truss. I was just going to paint it with bitumastic paint however there's an option to have it galvanised for a few hundred quid. Are Catnics CX lintels not suitable for this kind of application?

    Lintel above a bifold?

I'm putting a 4m bifold into a blockwork constructed single storey extension out of the back. Above it is a pitched roof, with velux and inside the ceiling is vaulted so no horizontal trusses. I've been advised by the SE to use a RHS with plate, but I was wondering if anyone had used a Catnic...

    Second opinion on structural calcs...

Its a cavity and the joists run in to the wall.

    Second opinion on structural calcs...

The floor joists are 9 inches (whatever that is metric) so I'll probably struggle to get flush anyway but I wasn't hoping for such a big bullnose before it vaults. If the piers are built from Brick I can go down to 440mm

Im out at the side but it's not pulling the room across. Thats a separate utility and garage. The opening is a fraction under 6m

    Second opinion on structural calcs...

I'm in the process of sorting out the plans for an extension. Semi detached 2 storey house. House is 6m wide, but i'm going out at the side and out at the back. Original construction is brick, cavity, block. Extension at the rear is blockwork only. I've had calcs for a span across the back of...

Opening up of fireplace for stove (Gas not wood burning)

Cheers Vinn, got the lintel and not planning on smashing any more in until that is fitted. Lintel is 1500mm wide as is the total width of the brick chimney. Should I just span the lot instead of cutting it down? I've sorted a HETAS engineer to come out at the end of next week for some advice...

Opening up of fireplace for stove (Gas not wood burning)

Just to add, that I'm now looking to fit a wood burner, so I'll be building a new constructional hearth below this once the opening is complete.

Opening up of fireplace for stove (Gas not wood burning)

So coming back to this, this is what the fireplace looked like. Lintel not actually sat on anything. void to left hand side with back boiler pipes. A bit of digging further: Left hand side looking up Gather to right hand side Currently opening is 580mm and I'd like to remove course...

Opening up of fireplace for stove (Gas not wood burning)

Thanks for replies, sorry not had chance to take any photos. I've tidied it up today, but theres no lighting in there now. I'll get some tomorrow with a bit of luck. On the Yeomans website, it suggests 150mm either side of the burner hence the requirement to take at least the course out to the...

Opening up of fireplace for stove (Gas not wood burning)

Vinn, we are looking to buy a Yeoman CL3 or CL5. Its a work in progress at the moment and having removed the old fireplace, gives me an opportunity to see what we have to play with. The floors have been up as there was some water ingress from the front of the house but that appears to have...

Opening up of fireplace for stove (Gas not wood burning)

I have a 60s house with an internal chimney through the centre of the building. Strictly, i'm not installing a wood burner, as i'm putting a gas wood burner style Yeoman CL3 in there. Having knocked the old one out, and pulled away the plaster, I can see that the lintel is doing very little...

Water under house, cracks appearing in walls

Airbricks are clear and have been for last 3 years. Theres constantly at least 2 inches of water under there.

Water under house, cracks appearing in walls

But if its common, surely there should be something in place which prevents the joists and floorboards from rotting? The smell is also apparent, as the water swills around the 50 years of dust and everything else under there. I sucked out over 100 litres of water from it about a month ago, but...
