    Generator advice

Suggest you have a word with Lombardini (01865 793299) about that. My 15LD engine seems fine on light load, but it's never run for more than 2 hrs at a time like that, so perhaps not long enough to test the result?

    TT earthing-Wooden building?

Large Wooden Rowing Club Clubhouse on "stilts" (concrete walls, near river). TT supply. Main incomer has slow 100mA RCCD, then 30mA RCCD to ring. All lights pre 30mA trip. Changing room has one shower, with florescent fittings out of reach, fed with PVC twin cable (no earth), difficult to...

    Generator advice

AFAIK, there's no problem using red diesel for generators, or 35 sec CH fuel. A few rural garages sell red, but if you can't find one speak to a friendly Farmer & buy a bit off him! Domestic fuel suppliers are not allowed to deliver less that 500 litres at a time, so you can't get them do supply...

    Bedroom wall light

Wanted to replace a wall spotlight over the bed with similar but with integral pull cord switch. Have been advised by Electrician that these are not allowed/not avaliable now?? Is this correct.

    TT, multiple earthing.

Thanks Guys. Lectrician, you've raised a good point, the SWA has no leakage protection. Two solutions come to mind : -- 1) I could put a 100mA type S RCCD to feed it, if I did this, then should the rod be left at the Garage end, or be at the House end, or both? I understand Ban's point about...

    TT, multiple earthing.

My detached garage is fed with SWA cable via fuse/breaker from directly after the meter. The garage has it's own Cons. unit with RCCD & earth rod. The rods are 30 mtr apart. The house & garage earths are connected together via the SWA, is this correct, or should they be isolated?

    Question about TN-S and TN-C-S

Slightly OT. I've always wondered how good the usual earth rods are, don't they corrode after a few years? Would not, say, a six inch square sheet of stainless steel buried two foot down be better?

    Burglar Alarms

Gardtec panels are one of the easiest to use & programme. They are now part of the Risco Group. Suggest you phone 0870 60 510000 to get to their local branch, and ask them to suggest a Company near to you to come & give you a quote. Suggest you don't ask for a appox price over the phone, get...

    BT lines

Thanks securespark & baldelectrician. I agree terminating the ASP's involvement is the logical approach, as with any fault, "split the system down the middle to see which side is giving the problem" is the normal approach, but if incoming calls don't go anywhere near the ASP's exchange, it...

    BT lines

Thanks securespark. I thought incoming calls did'nt go via the ASP's exchange, i.e. they were direct, is this right? My friend is not on the internet, so I hoped the forum would'nt mind my posting on his behalf.

    BT lines

I have a friend who runs an Indian takeaway. He has 2 business BT lines, but is also signed up to an Alternative Service Provider, using Carrier Preselection. Since Friday no-one can dial in, both numbers give the message "this number does not accept incoming calls". He can't dial out, even...

    Overload protection

Thanks Sparks123. You have more or less confirmed my suspicions that it's a 3 phase device. The RS unit will do the exact job, so think I will have to go for that. Regards.

    Overload protection

Re the Siemens relays on eBay. The guy selling them does'nt have the data sheet. Says there are 7 front terminals (NC pair, NO pair, plus T1, T2, T3), & 3 pins out the back. Downloaded the data sheet from Siemens last week, but it's encryped, so can't view it. And Siemens must have reorganised...

    Overload protection

I have a 7.5KVa single phase generator (240V, 32A). Want to protect it from overload, would a 32A MCB or wire fuse be best? It is often run at full rating, with occasional 5A overload. This it can take for short periods (it's a big old beast), but I would like some way of remotley indicating...

    Big c/o switch

I need a big c/o switch, perhaps 50A. Have a site with a 230V 30A single phase generator. They need a second one, perhaps 100A. One OR the other will be used regularily. Think I need a simple "knife" contact c/o sw. Single pole would do, but a 3 pole would be better (could then route the starter...

    Telephone Ringing Problem

Thanks for your replies Guys (& Gals?). Lectrician; regret I don't know what you mean by "D side", exchange ? Plugwash; You've hit the nail on the head, don't want to call out BT until I'me fairly sure the fault is on their side; I've heard they charge if they cant find a problem? Bathjobby...

    Telephone Ringing Problem

I have an intermittent fault. Sometimes an incoming call rings just once, if I hear it & pick up the Rx. the line is there an comms. ok. Other times ringing is normal. Can't find anything wrong with the house wiring, suspect the incoming line is intermittent high resistance (rural situation...

    RCCD "sensitivity"

Thanks all for your replies. Both RCCD's are about 8 years old, they are RCCD's, not ELCB with earth wire. Think I might have to investigate how the trip sw/resistor is wired on the 30mA one. If I measure the resistor that will give me the test current. Will also double check appliance leakage.

    RCCD "sensitivity"

Does anyone know what appox. current the Trip button on a 30mA RCCD "applies"? Is it,say, around 35 mA, or much larger? I have a 30mA RCCD "downstream" of a 100mA one, and when you press the test button on the 30mA one, both trip out (no appliances connected). Is this right, I would have...
