    Cutting a joist

Does anyone have a good tip for cutting a ceiling joist which is holding my flat roof up (I'm fitting a new roof window). My options are; turning the saw upside down - not sure that will be too accurate or using a jigsaw, but they tend to wonder. Anyone got any other suggestions? Many...

    New flat roof window

Each joist has another peice of timber fixed to the top of it, this is thicker at one end and narrows off (obviously providing a fall for the flat roof). Do I also have to fit a peice of timber to the top of my new joists? Thanks again.

    New flat roof window

Thanks RedHerring2. I'm happy to go with that rule, better to be safe than sorry. Does that mean I should put 2 new joists together (where I was going to put 1 new joist), and then fix another new one to the extg joist at the opposite side of the opening?

    New flat roof window

I'm about to install a new Velux window into a flat roof. Please see my proposal, does this look okay? Will one new joist (running across the room) be enough, or should I put two joists fixed together to give it extra strength. Many thanks.

    Dummy Box

I want to put a dummy burglar alarm box on my daughter's house. 1/. Can you buy dummy boxes that are connected to the mains that will power a small light inside the box? (it's too high to keep climbing up to change a battery). 2/. I would like to run a cable down the outside of the...

    Bathroom Light

I'm back again talking about my bathroom light project  This project is tiny; install a pull cord and 2 lights. I'm going to be pulling the ceiling down so I will get full access/visabilty of the joists etc. My question; How hard can this be? Although electrics scare me I do have...

It's a large flat roof and I had it refelted last year. Should I go Duplex boards and rockwool? Thanks.

    Bathroom plasterboard

I'm about to bash my bathroom ceiling down, I will re-board and get someone to skim. I assume I just need the ordinary 12.5mm platerboard, nothing special? I guess there will be old fashioned loft insulation in the void (it's a flat roof, 1980's), do I need any special insulation or do I...
