    Desk Restoration

Cleaning fluid sounds ominous. Wipe down with a damp cloth and elbow grease if necessary. Anything that doesn't shift will come off when you do that light sand down.

Where to position curtain rail when you have a picture rail

1952 ex-council terraced house, very typical post-war house in these parts. Picture rail 230mm from ceiling, then 100mm from bottom of picture rail to top of window reveal. Where would you put the curtain rail? I know this is probably a design / personal preference thing but I just cannot...

Sorry, not exactly software, but ISP question

Hi folks Having had pretty good bandwidth from Tiscali for several years it dropped three weeks ago to about .3meg most of the time. Tiscali are doing their usual thing of fobbing me off so I think it's time to change ISP. I work from home most days and not being able to make VOIP calls...

sealing wood worktop, yes I've read all posts on Tung etc

Hi guys Beech block worktop. Been oiling it with raw linseed oil. Lots of posts about how long this takes to dry but I find it is sucked into the wood so fast it is dry within 12 hours and water is no longer beading on it after a couple of days. Have done about 5 coats now. Getting...

latex self levelling - not level / slow to go off

Thanks Mattysupra. You're right. Apparently some of the bags got wet in one corner a few days beforehand. Big lumps were sifted out and smaller ones are now visible in the floor - hence ratio of latex to cement (or whatever it is) was wrong for that bit of the floor. You must be shaking your...

    noisy Grundfos on secondary flow

Thanks guys. Yes, it is a bronze impellor. Pump fitted in flow. Plumber says he has fitted lots like this and it hasn't been a problem, but is willing to come back and change it to the return. I'll also ask him about fitting a thermostat so the pump isn't running all the time when it's on.

Varnished skirting, not painted. So how do I seal the gaps?

I am NOT a professional, just a DIYer, but in the past I have mixed a small amount of the coloured paint with the filler. This makes it blend in with the wall. It needs to be a water-based filler. I've used ready mixed and dry powder filler and both work with a bit of paint mixed in...

    noisy Grundfos on secondary flow

We have had secondary flow plumbed in with a Grundfos pump (so that there's hot water instantly at the taps, don't have to run off cold water first). When it's been on for a while (maybe half an hour) the pump starts screaming. The plumber returned and bled the pump, then replaced the...

latex self levelling - not level / slow to go off

Compound mixed by hubby (sparks with lots of building experience) and the bricky. No extra water was added. Some of the areas are whitish, have been since they were poured. No white powder on surface. In fact whitest area is the one that's still soft and rather rubbery. No best befere...

latex self levelling - not level / slow to go off

Help, I think we have messed up. And reading lots of past posts on the subject has not made me optimistic. Substrate is thermal aquafloor panels then heating mat. Used Febflor latex self levelling compound, mixed as per instructions with an electric whisk, in batches (one bag powder with one...

    insulation in brick extension

Hi folks We are extending the kitchen out into the old single skin brick coal store and shed. We had intended to line the brick with batons and Tri-iso 10 insulation, then plasterboard. Now the demolition of the internal walls is complete we are re-thinking. In terms of insulation...

    Transferring files to Thecus NAS

Hi Breezer NAS = Network Attached Storage. Thecus is the make. It's just a storage box that we thought we'd store music, photos, DVDs etc on. You can only access via browser on pc, and cannot it doesn't have 'Send to' as an option when you right click on files. It's connected via...
