    Chamfered batten

With vertical cladding the recomendation is to fit vertical batons with horizontal counter batons. The horizontal batons should have a 15 degree chamfer to move any moisture away from the cladding and into the void.

    Chamfered batten

I am putting up some vertical timber cladding. according to the TRADA guide I should use treated batten with a chamfer to move any moisture ingress away from the cladding. Does anyone know if you can get treated battens already chamfered, I can do it myself but then I would be leaving...

    Terminating SWA

I have checked the volt drop and current capacity and both are OK acording to the 17th edition tables. What are the earthing issues and how do you check things out. The BCO is aware of the works, and the finished install will be checked by an electrician and signed off when complete...

    Terminating SWA

Hi, I am putting a 4mm SWA cable from the house to an outbuilding. The outbuilding will have a small consumer unit. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to terminate the SWA wire armour neatly into a consumer unit. The only thing I can come up with is to gland the cable off using an angle...

Flat roof detail for a timber clad building

I want to get a clean contemporary look, so no soffits or facia boards I am afraid. My plan is to finish the cladding level with the raised edges of the flat roof, then finishing off with an aluminium trim / flashing.

Flat roof detail for a timber clad building

Hi, I am looking for a flat roof system for a timber clad building, at the moment GRP is the most appealing. Can anyone recommend a supplier of the necessary roofing materials, paretically the aluminium trims and flashings needed to give a neat finish against the cladding timber.

    Building Height

The house is in a conservation area, and the building will be close to the boundary as well. Double whammy.

    Building Height

I am building a garden room away from the main house, the plan is to build to a good standard (current building regulations). The local planner has told me I can go to 2.5 metres with the flat roof, however when you take out the depth of the floor and ceiling joists, the flat roof run off and...

    plastic footing forms

I am interested in using some of the plastic footing forms for the foundation of a garden room. I have seen some pictures, and there is a USA version called 'bigfoot'. Does anyone know where these can be obtained in the UK, also any experience in there use?

    uNDERSTANDING THE PUMP OVER-RUN

The boiler as been wired so that it turns on (live feed) when either of the two port valves are open, the pump runs at the same time. effectively the boiler does turn off on the cylinder thermostat and the room thermostat.

    uNDERSTANDING THE PUMP OVER-RUN

The Boiler is OLD, a Myson Orion. There is a connection for the pump at the boiler, but as there is no permanent live it would seem that it would not have a proper pump overrun facility.

    uNDERSTANDING THE PUMP OVER-RUN

My boiler as a switched live (turns the boiler on) and a live from the boiler to the pump. I am assuming that the live to the pump allows the pump to continue to run for a time after the boiler to stop firing when the return temperature is high. (this being controlled by the boiler). When...

    Never seen this before.

I don't know if the boiler is suitable, is there any way of checking? What is the difference between a sealed boiler and a vented one? There is a expansion vessel fitted with a pressure release valve and a proper filling loop, a tundish is fitted to collect the overflow. I have checked...

    Never seen this before.

Thanks for the information. I am sure it is not a direct cylinder, the heating circuit is sealed and holding pressure and the cylinder is vented. I dont know why the heating coil is not used. Is there any way of checking if the heating coil is ok, or is it easier to just change the tank.

    Never seen this before.

I am trying to get to grips with the central heating in my new (old) house. The hot water cylinder as the standard heating indirect coil entering / exiting at the bottom of the tank, it as pipes connected but I am fairly sure they ultimatly do not connect to the central heating boiler. There...

    Flat Roof Firring problem.

Is it possible to run the firring strips accross the joists, this would allow me to run the joists across the shortest span of the roof. Many years ago I did some work at a manufacturer of cork slabs cut at an angle and various thicknesses used above the decking to provide a run off, dont...

    Garden room

Could I use a parapet at the front / sides, but leave the rear side open and fit the guttering there. I was thinking about using vertical cladding, maybe a 'splayed' profile, I thought this may help keep the area behind the cladding ventilated.

    Garden room

Thanks for the input. The building will be a small living space away from the house. The intention is to add heating and make it as comfortable as possible. One idea I would like to investigate is to have the roof hidden behind the cedar cladding giving a nice clean finish. I am not sure...

    Garden room

I am in the process of designing a garden room and would like some advice as to the correct construction method that I should use. At the moment I am thinking of a wood frame with 70x50 studs on 500mm centres, this will be filled with rigid foam insulation boards. Outside will be sheeted with...

    Central heating system choices

I am in the process of specifying a new central heating system for a Victorian 2 bedroom semi detached house. Initially the system will provide heating via conventional radiators and hot water. I am adding a loft bedroom; this will probably have under-floor heating, mainly due to lack of space...
