Correction Tay I meant to say 10mm. Yes I know OSG says 6mm but have you noticed how each successive edition of the regs goes up anothe notch lol. Its gonna be fun meeting the latest ammendment "All sockets must me RCD protected" Deep joy.

    Weatherproof Junction Boxes

I always put a ring of silicone sealant around the screw hole on the outside of the box before screwing to the wall. Than for good measure I add a dollop on the screw. Works for me.

TT installations must be protected by 100mA RCD, Time delayed so that if the 30mA RCD you have protecting your sockets trips it will not take out the entire installation. Circuits must be arranged to prevent inconvenience if one circuit trips.

Earthing conductor depends upon the csa of the tails but to be safe use 16mm cable. Use a time delayed RCD for main incomer. Yes you can use the Ze obtained from a standard ELI tester. anything above 100 Ohms is regarded as possibly unstable but if in doubt add another rod and connect them in...

help with new consumer unit and tripping RCD

I hope the 100mA RCD is time delayed or both RCD's will trip when you get an earth fault. Spark123 is right, this is probably a TT supply. Probably fed overhead from a pole. The regs require the Main incomer to be a 100mA RCD (type S is best), then the 'non' RCD protected side of the board...

    Wiring a FCU

If this FCU is on the ring the two cables you are looking at are the two legs of the ring. From what you describe there used to be something connect to this FCU but it has been disconnected. You might like to change it for a single socket outlet as it could be of more use.

help with new consumer unit and tripping RCD

Sounds to me like someone has connected the neutral of the new ring to wrong neutral bar. The RCD works by comparing the current flowing in the Phase conductor with that flowing in the Neutral condutor. A differeence of 30mA will cause it to trip.

2 gang switch to a dimmer with a difference

Identify the two conductors controlling the power to the cupboard light. Remove them from the switch and connect them together in an insulated terminal block. Check to make sure the cupboard light still works in the same way as before. Then replace the switch with a dimmer, connecting to the two...

    Ze/Zs

The NICEIC forms have a box marked Ze and the supplementary box above the test results is listed as Zs. you can only have one Ze so the reading at each board is Zs or as stated previously Zdb

    Ze/Zs

The NICEIC forms have a box entitled 'To be completed only if the distribution board is not connected directly to the origin of the installation' this is the characteristics at this distribution board.

    pyro underground

Pyro or Mineral Insulated Metal Sheathed is too expensive to supply a garden but does have the advantage of higher current carrying capacity for a given conductor csa. Depth of cable depends upon where the cable runs. It should be deep enough to 'not be disturbed'. So in a flower bed it will be...

    I must be mad! [pic]

Although Bricks are about 4 inches you are forgetting the plaster on top. In most installations we run the cables horizontally and vertically from fittings then the wiring is covered by dot and dabbed plasterboard.

here are a couple more examples of DIYnot!!!!

We haven't corner the market in idiots. I have just come back from Spain, and all the buses I travelled on had 'life hammers' (for breaking the windows in an emergency), fixed to their holders with nylon tiewraps.
