We've actually gone for the 6x2 and using 6x2 cross members and noggings which should prevent any flexing. The piers will be 4x4 or 6x4 (2 of 6x2) and plenty of them to minimise any "bounce"
Yeah, I thought as much with the tarmac. I have given it a good thump with a hammer and it seemed solid enough, but there is a lot of weight in an 8x12 shed. Think we will go with the piers. We're going for the 6x2 as well. 4x2 would probably have been OK if it were being placed on level...
Must admit, i too am a bit suspect about the adjustable legs, especially as one needs to ge about 18 inches. We could build a pier of course, then sit a small adjustable leg on top but then again, may as well just put a pier in of the right lengtjh
Thanks, my concern with the ground screws is their being on sloping tarmac and needing to be 18inches tall. I Could of course build a small pier so shorter ones would be needed
Looking for a bit of advice on building a shed
I'm planning on building an 8 x 12 foot shed on sloping tarmac. Between the highest and lowest point is about 18 inches and all four corners need to be supported by different lengths.
What sized timber would be best for the frame? 6x2 or would 4x2...
The straps are just nailed to the rafters, not the noggins.
The sloped roof is huge. The rafters are joined to stretch the full extent of the roof. There are other rafters in the roof that don't have noggins that are also joined.
Hi thanks for the reply,
We have soffit but I can't see any obvious vents and I am not sure if the ridge is vented.(Going to find some binoculars and try and see) I think the membrane is breathable, it's like thick canvas. The house was built about 25 years ago by the previous owner. I've just...
Hi, I'm looking for a bit more advice on insulating a store room over my attached garage. Building control are happy that building regs are not needed but the room couldnt be classed as a living room/ bedroom etc. However I want to do the work to a decent standard.
I understand that i need to...
Yeah, thought I might have to add another layer, think I'll probably go for the 90mm pir option. If I can get it cheaper than 100mm, probably nothing much in it. Even though it's not subject to building regs, I want to do it right
I have a store room over my attached garage which I would like to insulate. The room will be for a den where I can put a train set.
I have spoken to the local building control and they are happy that building regs are not needed but it couldnt be classes as a living room/ bedroom etc. They did...
Hi
Anyone ever tried engraving ceramic tiles?
I have just engraved a pattern on a glazed ceramic tile on a CNC machine with a diamind drag bit, should the surface be sealed and if so, what should be used.
The one I have done will be used as a trivet, but I would like to create some more for...
The hollow dowel is a shaft for a wooden clock which needs to take a 6mm dowel inside, the hole actually needs to be about 6.1mm to allow the inner dowel to turn. As it is wooden clock, I'd rather not use steel. I do have access to a hobby pillar drill but the distance between the Chuck and the...
Can anyone suggest the best type of bit to drill 6mm diameter holes in some 10mm hardwood dowel. The dowels are 180mm long and the hole needs to be down the whole length.
What type of should I be looking at Twist, Auger or something else and can anyone suggest a good approach to getting a good...
I came across the Tremie method whilst looking on the web for a solution, but I had not come across the Bentonite one. Both seem a bit complex to achieve for a comparatively small hole, especially seeing as I am mixing and pouring the stuff myself.
I think I am going to have to go with the...
The hole is currently about 350mm deep with water so it has gone down a bit (picture) I think that pouring even dry mix in could cause it to separate out.
I dug most of the hole a few months ago and it stayed dry. With all the recent rain, the ground is saturated. I have been pumping it out so I can get the hole to its final level, but after a few minutes the water is ankle deep again and overnight it fills to about 500mm deep. The top is loamy...
I want to lay a thick concrete slab to act as a base to a telescope. The slab is to be about 700*700*600 deep. I've dug the hole to the correct dimensions and now ,because of all the rain, I have a fish pond!
Is there any way I can pour the concrete without waiting for the water level to drop...
Thanks for the advice everyone, been really useful. So now I'm a bit stuck. Brick piers are obviously out of the question (unless there is some way of reinforcing them). Can anyone suggest an alternative that would be more suitable. Ideally I would like the fence to sit on top of the wall as it...
So to clarify, the problem would be with the panels tearing themselves out of the fixings rather than the piers themselves failing. I am planning on building the panels myself they would be 18 X 95 mm hit and miss boards with 50mm gaps running either side of 25 x 100 mm batons running top and...
