    render finishes

Is there a website that explains (e.g. shows samples) of different types of render finish and how to achieve them? I read all sorts of descriptions - tyrolean/pebbledash/roughcast/sponged etc - and I'm sure that people are not all using the same descriptions for the same finishes. barry

Fully supported waterproof membrane for shallow pitch?

I want a shallow pitch slate roof on an extension but can only get about 10 degree angle. I've read somewhere that shallow as this is can be done but needs to have "fully supported waterproof membrane" and the slates are then for aesthetics only. Anyone shed more light on this and/or...

    Tongue and groove non-flammable void???

I was planning to tongue and groove (fixed to battens) full height to ceiling on a bathroom wall but a friend says that the void behind has to be flame-proofed in some way according to building regulations? Anyone able to tell me anything about this? Thanks in advance.

    PDF "Restricted Sites"

When I try to open adobe attachments to incoming emails I get a blank internet screen with "Restricted Sites" at the bottom right-hand corner. I've tried changing privacy settings on Internet options-security-zones but no joy. Any ideas? It's really frustrating having these docs on my...

    Wood floor over ceramic tiles

I have old, glazed ceramic tiles in my dining room and would like to install engineered wood floor on top. The tiles weren't laid very well originally and have differences in height between individual tiles up to about 3mm. Do I need to screed or self-level first, or will normal wood-floor...

    Tips on laying laminate floor

Do you really expect to get other people spending their own time to help you when your response to WYL's first answer was "T***"!!! If you search this forum you'll see that WYL gives loads of good advice to people, and most of them appreciate it. But then, some "T***" don't.

Damp coming in due to partially demolished outhouse

Check the floor level of the old outhouse. If necessary, lower it to below the internal floor level and/or install a french drain. Don't be tempted to install an injected dpc; they don't work, especially in stone walls. If this doesn't solve the problem, come back.

    French Drain

Depends on conditions. If you're getting flood it probably means not deep enough, or not penetrating non-permeable layer? Also, you have to have fall from FD to soakaway. Percolation test is best way of predicting soakaway depth required (see www.pavingexpert.com).

    Rising Damp info available

Considering the number of posts and high level of interest/problems relating to "rising damp" I think this site might be of use. http://www.handr.co.uk/eiliterature/damp.html (Note to moderator: I have no connection with this site. Came across it during google search looking for answers...

    Gold Plating

You might struggle with this. Ten years ago there were probably 50+ small platers around the country who could do this for you; I'd be surprised if you can now find more than 3 or 4! (Unless you look in Taiwan or Shanghai). The base material of your nozzles could be brass, zinc (or less...

patio on top of existing patio?

If you decide to use a membrane, don't worry 'cos the new patio isn't going to go anywhere once laid (unless it's at an agle of 45')! Actually I wouldn't bother with a membrane. And I wouldn't do dabs at each corner of the slabs. That encourages ant nests and weeds. If that's what you did...

patio on top of existing patio?

It shouldn't be necessary to lift existing before laying new, providing you've still got a good height between the top of the new patio and the DPC. Should be minimum 150mm. To stop weeds you could lay a membrane on the old before laying the new? Remember to give a fall away from the house to...

    Rebuilding a fireplace

Depends on the opening/flue ratio, ventilation and the results of smoke test. If you decide not to have these thinks advised by a professional, I'd strongly recommend you fit a carbon monoxide detector in the room. Could save life(s).

    Rebuilding a fireplace

If the sides of the opening are more than a few inches away from the sides of your basket you can use ordinary bricks rather than firebricks, and ordinary mortar mix. If they're too close, use fireclay mortar (ask at your local fireplace shop/builder's merchant). You can get a huge range of...
