    tv aerial coax run

I'm setting up a centralised media cupboard away from the living room in my flat, (digibox, tuner, vcr dvd etc all go in here along with infra red remote extender) and I;ve run the coax from the socket in the living room into there also. but regarding the vhf signal, can I 'T' off from the...

To glue batons to concrete subfloor or not?

on my 3rd battoned floor now, tried solvent glue, nice if you like the smell of it  but I got better and results with stix all and also pva. tip with the pva, pour it on liberally where the battons go down so that it sits in a puddle of it - paint it on and it will come off. no more...

    Copper vs plastic pipes

i steer clear of all pushfit except hep20, most versatile of the lot, compression for fitting ballofixes and suchlike, and then yorkshire for the finishing touches. Next time for me its hep for all joins and junctions and then replacing with yorks when the pipe layout has been set...

Painted wooden floors in a bathroom

ah well, if you really must do it on the cheap :) the only way I'd go forward is to apply a bead of 'stix-all' between the gaps. pva and sawdust varnishes ok but doesnt last on squeaky boards, nor will paint. you may want to apply some 'waterseal' before painting. for future reference:-...

Painted wooden floors in a bathroom

real wooden floors in a bathroom are perfect, feels much better than soggy cold tiles. but if you can, take up all the boards, treat the joists and underside of your boards with cuprinol , sand em and relay properly with no gaps. (need a floorboard clamp or 2). If like me you had a massive...

Please advise me on a good quality toolset.

basically treat even the highest quality items as expendable/consumables and have loads of redundancy, best to get 3 of each of the essentials rather than one of everything. ...and never lend anything out :) b.

    UnevenExtension floor

absolutely, though not to be confused with a polish builder. - he will do your floor for about 150 quid +100 on materials and 20 for vodka (no tea). either way sounds good to me :)

    UnevenExtension floor

had exactly the same situ here's what i did, find the highest peaks and chip them off/grind down, then get a spirit level with a laser in it and use it to 'plumb line' or whatever you call it round the room with a pencil. you have to use a bit of judgement to find the highest point as a...

new stud wall with wide doorway...

try and assess the condition of the concrete floor, if it's thin and /or cracked in parts i'd forget drilling/screwing into it and use a polymer glue. also u may need the flex if you forget to acclimatise the timber! b.

    Copper vs plastic pipes

my best working formula is...copper for where you can see it, plastic for where you cant. cant go wrong there. b.

Knocking down a stud wall frame

do yourself a favour and get a mains reciprocating saw, fit a metal blade and cut through the very ends of each stud at 90 degrees. now you have left over some nice well seasoned reusable timber :D b.

    crossing cable

thanks, I guess I'm flouting the Building standards rules but OK with Faraday. :) will do without the added expense of screened speaker wire...

    crossing cable

I'm in the middle of a home automation layout (speakers in every room) and have already done one room with six lines of speaker wire (standard unshielded) going into various corners under a floating floor. But i've got to spur out a few mains outlets and the mains cable will run directly...

Air brick in thick stone wall

they use petrol driven angle grinders to cut kerb stones, if your wall stones are as solid...but the disks/cut's too large for an air brick. A large core drill +lot of sweat may do but hire a decent demolition drill. I'd keep the hammer off to avoid creating cracks.

    expanding foam accident

    expanding foam accident

I squirted a load of this stuff round a window, all well and good until I realised that half of it had fallen on to my newly varnished pine floor (ronseal diamond clear), in a panic I tried to wipe it off only making things worse. yes if I'd left it to set I could easily have pulled snapped...

    solid oak floor on concrete?

I had a similar situ, but I managed to tap off the tiles easy with hammer and chisel, 1 tap and each tile popped out. [Even though they were stuck on 'fast'.] I then -after thorough cleaning- stuck on 2cm battens with liberal amounts of pva, 35cm apart, got a router out and semi t&g'd the...

Worx. Any good for the DIY'er?

gave worx a go, (circular saw 18v), but it died after 4 months. only buy if you can spare the lunchbreaks going back to the store. i find bosch the best as they are very well designed and on the rare occasion I had to open one up, it was easy to fix, b.

    large building project over staircase

If i take photo's as I go along showing whats behind the renderings, can i get retrospective planning and approval should it come to that years later? or will the freeholder insist that I return everything to the awful condition it was(is) in before (improperly fastened studwork, poor pipe...

    large building project over staircase

thanx, leasehold maisonette, not a shared staircase. the main driving force behind this is so that a small wc room can be extended into the hall and the sink for it (there was none before :? ) can be built into the 'cupboard' over the stairwell. it's door frame will have to be 'rotated...
