    Painting ply

Yeah dry area although it's a ground floor bay and whilst it should never see any water, I thought there could be the chance of moisture so thought ply may be the best choice?! Would mdf be okay? Was planning to use some rigid insulation between the framing and if I need one, a vapour barrier?

    Painting ply

Was planning to replace some t&g with panelling and was going to use ply fr the main back with mdf and a bt of trim to create the panels. Only thing was, I am not sure what the finish on the areas of ply will when gloss painted? Should I use a primer first?

    Insulation in a bay window

Am plannign to replace the internal cladding around our bay window (currently t&g and was planning to create panelling to match the window shutters). I know from previous repairs that there is no insulation within the bay - basically it consists of solid stone wall, gap, then framing and...

New Flat roof - Single Ply membrane or Zinc/lead

We are planning a smallish flat roof extension, which has been drawn up with a warm deck flat roof (apparently we are no longer allowed cold deck flat roofs in Scotland?). The original design had a single ply membrane covering (sarnafil or similar) and I had been thinking of used Zinc or...

I want to add a new air vent into my underfloor void to increase airflow. I have a decent solum under a suspended timber floor (house circa 1900) and think I need some additional air flow under one side of the house. Solid stone walls and I am confident in creating the opening but unsure...

Getting a good finish on a wooden external door

Was planning to repaint our wooden front door, if we ever get a few days without rain! I want to get a really nice finish and had thought about getting it dipped and stripped but worry that the door may not hold together through it and don't fancy stripping it by hand. To get a decent...

New sockets in lathe and plaster

Our current sockets are fitted into our skirting and due to a new wooden floor being installed, the plan is also to renew the skirtings, so plan to get the sockets moved up into the wall. Whilst I will be getting an electrician to fit the sockets, I was planning to running the new cables (not...

Requiring a BMW 3 series glove box handle?!

Thought I may as well give it a go, as you 50/50 to get it right. Didn't factor in the need for 3 hands to hold the solder iron, wire and solder so will have to wait until the wife gets in!

Requiring a BMW 3 series glove box handle?!

Sorry typo in the title - meant to say repairing... It's definitely the handle, I think it's connected to the central locking system hence the power connection

Requiring a BMW 3 series glove box handle?!

The glovebox on my 3 series BMW stopped working and after getting it open and taking off the handle I found that a couple of wirings have become detached. It's the two brown wires (one has a purple strip) that have become detached from the small switch box that sits on the handle side. My...

Our home wifi signal has started to keep dropping off! Haven't changed the wireless modem or provider and the wifi signal used to be good throughout most parts of the house. Over the past few weeks the signal appears to have started dropping off, both on the Iran around the house and on...

laying parquet flooring onto a suspended timber floor

thanks WoodYouLike, hadnt hoped you would respond, you seem to be an expert when it comes to wood flooring! I take it that the blocks should be glued to the solid ply base? i've seen a couple of lots of reclaimed blocks - any idea what the idea thickness should be when I am looking at these?

laying parquet flooring onto a suspended timber floor

Was thinking of laying a reclaimed parquet floor in our sitting room, which has a suspended timber floor (floorboards). the house is c. 1900 and the majority of the boards are original so have some cupping, but are generally flat. I assume that I shouldn't lay the parquet blocks (I am...

New felt roof - cement skews?

Was planning on building a small section of flat roof in a short "alley way" at the side of the house - basically marine ply with a felt covering. However I'm not sure on how to create the edges - don't really want to dress the felt up the walls as I don't want to cut into the walls to create...
