Correct. I had it wired right but the common loop had got caught and damaged by the screw for the plate and shorted out. I think the screws were over long

I’ve left the switch as it is in the photo with a bit of tape over the exposed wire highlighted green, then turned power back on ok. I do have a multimeter yes. Not sure which connections to measure across though

I rewired several other switches (added earth wires and terminal blocks) on the same circuit, there was a single switch that was connected to COM and L2 even though it is a 1-way switch and was upside down as a result. I switched it for a dimmer and used COM and L1. Could that cause a problem?

I’ve tried both and the paper tape was a ballache, but mesh is easy. If youre good with the paper tape it probably gives you a nicer corner though

Do I need to put mesh tape into the corner edges of the wall I’m about to skim? Also can I skim over the areas I’ve filled with easifill or do I need to pva first?

I get it I think, live and neutral go across a load like a light or something not just a switch? Which would be a short circuit im guessing and go bang

So why are the neutrals twisted together and there are two brown (live? ) wires connected to the switch? I thought live went to common and L1 would be connected to neutral

Yes they are. Should i get an electrician to sort this out? With the bare wires twisted together too it seems like the whole thing is a dangerous mess, and I am new to this I think the metal faceplates have plastic backs if that makes any difference

i don’t understand why two different contractors haven’t earthed any of the light sockets? This was done 2 years ago, the rest of the house 7 years ago

Yes they're just twisted together and theres a bit of copper exposed

The soil pipe is rigid plastic just goes straight up and terminates about 30cm above the floor of the attic. I did get a quote to put the stack through the roof but I thought £800 sounded a bit much
