    diy wooden windows advice

Just going through this ourselves, not had any issues with certification, CE, U values etc. etc. BC popped round on the first DIY installation day and checked three things, kite mark for french windows, that the ventilation was no worse than the previous windows and no changes in fenestration ...

    Damp Patches driving me mad

I've tried the paints, afraid it's a waste of time. Along the lines of John's comment, I have some condensation patches in 'dead air' corners of the house, and I'm seriously considering trying a positive pressure ventilation system. Stick it in the loft with a couple of vents and allegedly...

    Preparing Ground and Exterior Wall

For Q1, we had the same problem, small lake gathered on and under the pad, ended up taking up the concrete. A bit of a pain to separate from the house, but worth the effort. It'll also give your rough cast some clearance off the ground. As for your walls, looks like a small ancient...

    Damp Patches driving me mad

I have exactly the same problem, slightly different circumstances but it may help. Our floors were filled with concrete after the house build. Internal walls are solid brick and I suspect there's a capillary action under the membrane which is hitting the internal wall and making the base of...

    Paint or replace with UPVC?

Isn't the main cost the scaffold, which will be the same for upvc? Just about to get our 8 wooden windows done, inside and out for £1800+ VAT in the midlands. Lots of stripping and filling involved. More quotes?

    A Sturdy Climbing Frame

Designed myself with some inspiration from visiting playgrounds.... Nothing spectacular, 1.5m sq frame, 1.5m high platform, 2.7m frame height. Timber was around £280, fixings £50, lots of bark £50, slide £70 new off ebay. Borrow of mitre saw (essential) = pint or two of beer. +...

    A Sturdy Climbing Frame

Here we go.... to get this thread back on track. Dismayed by flimsy, high cost, wooden climbing frames available online, I embarked on a DIY. A competitive timber yard quote, and a pile of bolts and coach screws from t'internet, some flakey sketches and precision measuring, loan of a mitre...

It can't be difficult to install timber patio doors?

Update :-) I'm pleased to say the diy installation was uneventful, the building control chap came round at midday to inspect, he suggested I keep the 'case' open for up to 3 years in case I wanted to to anything else, and asked that I post him a picky of the doors installed. So far survived...

It can't be difficult to install timber patio doors?

Thank you for confirming this Freddy, I haven't been asked that but it makes sense and confirms the course of action.

Excessive moisture in external store. How to prevent?

You probably need some through ventilation rather than just a vent in the door. Pop an airbrick at the end furthest from the door and maybe some vents up high.

It can't be difficult to install timber patio doors?

Thanks, I phoned round many local companies and no-one was prepared to fit and FENSA them, most commenting that they wouldn't guarantee someone elses windows. I thought FENSA and the guarantee were different beasts so i suspect thy are busy enough fitting their own windows. One chap did come...

It can't be difficult to install timber patio doors?

We've had two pairs for timber patio doors and frames made. They are now wood preserved, knot primed, paint primed and first coat of exterior gloss/satin. The 28mm DG glass is in the shed. Local building control are informed for the privilege of £169… :-( It's a 20 yr old extension...

Damp on internal wall above skirting

We had similar symptoms. House renovated by previous owner, floors replaced by membrane and concrete. External walls fine, plenty of opportunity for water to evaporate outside, some internal walls have a tide mark through summer and autumn before we put the heating on which presumably helps...

Damp proof course and dry channel - needs concrete 'bed'?

Same issues for me, ground level, shallow drains etc. I have 500mm difference in ground height so opted for a 9" retaining wall on a concrete footing. I left 100mm soil gap between the wall and the edge of the footings, a spade width in total between the house and retaining wall. I have left...

    Tree Recommendation

We're just about to have a big Sycamore tree removed from the corner of the garden as it's interfering with power lines. It'll allow some much needed light in but create a line of sight between our upstairs rooms and the neighbours. Any recommendations for a columnar native tree, max...

Digging trench for new water pipe.

Have a similar job, I'll be doing by hand, grinder to create straight edges, and topping with cold lay tarmac and compacting. I'll be replacing my drive in 3-5 years so hopefully it'll do the job!
