    clip-on adapter for universal SMPSU

Anyone know where I could replace this little doofer or what it might be called? Im getting fed up with poking the earth hole to plug it in. cheers

Scottish Govt consultation to regulate "electrician"

I wonder what is wrong with the status quo? are we demonstrably less electrically safe in Scotland? I am not an electrician in the Ban-All-Sheds sense of the word, though many of my customers see me as such and I am probably more competent than some card-carrying "Electricians" Personally I feel...

waste oil heater / Honeywell TF834.3

anybody got any experience with waste oil heater control boxes? namely in this case, Honeywell TF834.3 (rebranded as satronic among others) My question is regarding the oil preheater, and how it is supposed to be controlled. The datasheet of this module shows timing diagrams on p.3 Terminal 6 of...

    night rates with Bulb

Still trying to get to the bottom of what this 2-rate tarriff with bulb is. this is the "tarriff details" from Bulb energy. This is literally all I can find, but I think there ought to be some clause in the contract detailing how much night-rate is available in a 24 hour period... shouldnt there ?

    teleswitch faulty

ah yes. I guess all I really need to know is that we are getting our contracted allocation of lowrate. I am not sure why I thought I needed to know when it was coming on!

    teleswitch faulty

does the signal actually come from Droitwich? I had a vague feeling that there was another 198 LW tx in Cumbria to stretch up north. but maybe the switcher signals are only on the droitwich transmitter. seems a bit of a long shot especially in daylight.

    teleswitch faulty

Thanks all for input, I guess I will have to rig something up to automatically log the times, shouldnt be too hard.

    teleswitch faulty

Used to be... used to be.... an upstanding uncorruptible chap who knew the district, knew everyone, read the meters, kept it safe, provided value for money. Like the resident GPO man. all gone now. now they spend a fortune sending clueless young numpties out on daytrips with vans via roro ferry...

    teleswitch faulty

surely the teleswitches are addressed by group, then there can be (at least) delays within that group. Probably the groups are deployed geographically. eg, group A switches for Orkney Islands. Group B for shetland. Group C for Caithness, etc etc. Then the LW signal can enable group A. Group A...

possibly I have misused the technical term dither there.

    teleswitch faulty

yes I can see that makes some kinda sense. My first thought is that said random delay would have to be within certain parameters in order for the whole system to work.... is not the underlying concept here to make use of the surplus coulombs which are only surplus within certain defined periods...

    teleswitch faulty

always wondered how they got around that, i thought they grouped teleswitches together so that you could switch manageable groups in/out.... whatever, there must be a way of addressing teleswitches at least by groups, possibly individually? if so then it seems not unlikely that there is...

    teleswitch faulty

really?! the meter & teleswitch is on a semi-outdoors porch, I used to live there and you never hear it. I rigged up a lamp on the heating supply so that the current occupant would be able to know when the circuit energised, but... really? in his world, he is unable to sit there all day watching...

    teleswitch faulty

How can I find out what time periods this teleswitch should operate on? there must be some central control for the various teleswitch code groups....? attached is the somewhat unhelpful guide from Bulb energy (the present supplier for this property), I seriously cant believe that they are...

    teleswitch faulty

Property with "total heating total control" installation from back along. I believe that the heating (4 x old mass storage + immersion) is controlled by a radio teleswitch; I believe it relies on a signal embedded in the 198kHz service which is then decoded inside the teleswitch module. anyway...

    trying to understand a LIM

Anyone know how Bender LIM's work in some depth? this is what they give on their datasheets: "A measuring current in the μA range is superimposed onto the system which is recorded and evaluated by a microprocessor-controlled measuring circuit. The measuring time is dependent on the selected...

using inverters to power computer gear

quite a high volume of flannel there. aptsys, can you expand on the PFC issues please? JohnW2, regarding the UPS's; indeed when the UPS is called on to provide backup power its inverter runs.... but I don't think the inverter runs when line power is OK (do they?) these UPS units are clearly...

using inverters to power computer gear

when using 12V or 24VDC inverters (or indeed inexpensive inverter petrol generators) to power standard 240VAC computer equipment, what are the implications of the noise inherent in such inverters? people talk about electrical noise from inverters, and "dirty power", is this really a thing?

    sewing machine speed control

a simple resistor eh? what about a complicated resistor? Guess this must be something like that. a pressure-varying resistor I suppose. don't they get a bit hot?
