    Are joist hangers essential ?

I obviously need to talk to my local building inspector on Monday but wonder if anyone can help me out here - I have a 1930's solid concrete block house, and have started to lift a few floorboards to see what is underneath - seems the timber joists (100x75)just sit on the concrete sleeper walls...

Insulating a suspended floor - what to do with cables ?

That sounds about right Richard - Having been out of the loop regarding regulations for a long time it all seems so complicated so I want to err on the right side just in case....!

Insulating a suspended floor - what to do with cables ?

Thanks for the replies - the plan is to lift the floorboards, insulate between the 100x75mm joists with celotex then lay chipboard with maybe another thin sheet of celotex between the joists and chipboard. Having lifted more of the floor it now looks like I can run my cables down from the...

I seem to remember reading something about ring main cables and celotex/kingspan not going well together but cannot remember what was said or why... Can anyone please remind me what the deal is ? Thanks !

    Washing Machines ?

Boring question maybe, but we are going to be buying a WM soon having lived in rented accommodation so want to get something good but not too expensive. If I say £350 - £450 as a rough price what sort of machines should we be looking at and WHY ? There are 4 of us, so one wash a day, but while...

    Silicone removal

CT1 Multisolve is very good once you have cut off as much as you can manually - costs about £7.50 a can and my first one has lasted for several bathrooms with no signs of running out yet - left me wondering why I bought 6 of the things !

decorating a prefab house - help!!

One of the main reasons (or so I have been led to believe) was to prevent the formica from distorting the table - by putting it on both sides there was an even pull, thus keeping it flat. Really expensive kitchen worktops used to be the same which allowed them to be thinner yet still stable.

decorating a prefab house - help!!

Instead of a steam stripper get a sprayer and use warm water and some fabric conditioner once you have gone over it all with a scraper and pulled off whatever you can to allow the water to penetrate better. Steam can easily result in damaging the plaster, and a tiger (wallpaper piercing tool)...

Using Hybrid Polymers where painter's caulk is usually used?

dcdec - can you explain this ? I have not used CT1 (but their multisolv is wonderful at dissolving silicone !) or any other hybrid polymers but would assume that any product squeezed from a tube could be finished in a similar way giving a similar result, or am I being dumb here (always possible!)

    Cleaning white grout

Domestos Grot Buster. Stinks but does the job better than other bleach-based products I have used. Asda sell it, as do many other supermarkets.

Anyone own a Festool? Bit pricey......

Another one here who loves them - I only recently got my first sander - the RTS400. Within a week I had ordered a Rotex 90 sander and am getting a CXS drill shortly.. They work. Thats it. An hour using my old palm sander was enough to never want to use it again and numb fingers. 5 hours...

Is there a simple explaination of building regs ?

I am buying a house and want to make a few changes, some of which will require building regs. I have had a quick look and just cannot make head or tail of what does or doesn't need approval - so is there any sort of list of what does in SIMPLE terms ? The last time I did anything vaguely...
