    central heating inhibiters

?? How do you pour it into the rad? Via bleed valve at top? Surely not? I was going to pour it into the attic expansion tank.

    Draining Central Heating System

Draining = emptying all the water out of the system so the pipes, tanks, cylinder etc are all empty (and can't freeze)/crack). Flushing = pumping water round the system under pressure, and out, to flush out the sludge.

    central heating inhibiters

I'll be moving a radiator and so draining down the system. When I refill it, should I add an inhibiter? If so, Sentinel X100, or Fernix F1, or something else? Or does it make no difference?

    moving heating controls

Cheers - I'll get my sister to hunt out a ladder! No - he left home when I was 6. But I forgave him! Did I say costs were an issue? I'm just gathering information. Always wise before going shopping..... Thanks.

    moving heating controls

Thanks Ianmcd. However pursuading dad to make any change at 95 is not easy (hence sister's idea of a step ladder). Wireless would be a couple of stepladders too far. What he might accept is (ideally) the same, or near identical, controls moved somewhere near the existing one but handier to...

    moving heating controls

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.... Errrrr.... that was exactly the reason for asking the 3 questions above! Any answers? Or as Terrywookfit suggests should I be on the electrical board?

    moving heating controls

The controls for my elderly father's heating system are in a cupboard above/behind the sink in the bathroom. When he wants to change the timer, or use the 1 hour over-ride switch, he has to climb up to reach into the cupboard. My sister has suggested a proper small solid-footed step ladder as a...

Oil Vs water based wood stain

Thanks. Is there any downside to putting a top coat of the Sikkens over water based Dulux?

Oil Vs water based wood stain

I posted in the decorating forum without reply, so maybe it's more of a woodworking query: Several years ago I had a new front door constructed. The joiner put on 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol Fiter 7 Plus - an oil based woodstain. This year I had new window frames constructed. Different joiner as...

which profession for a stud wall?

I want to put a low insulated stud wall beneath a window in a room where the sloping roof forms the wall (picture). And move the radiator forwards. As well as a plumber, do I look for a joiner? Odd job man? General builder?

Dates of introduction of Planning requirements/Building Regs

A buyer is asking about various Planning & building consents. These all relate to the 70s or earlier. I see from the USEFUL INFORMATION sticky that The Building Act 1984 introduced the Building Regs requirements so I shall simply say they predate the 84 Act. Is there a similar initial piece...

    Oil Vs water based woodstain

Several years ago I had a new front door constructed. The joiner put on 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol Fiter 7 Plus - an oil based woodstain. This year I had new window frames constructed. Different joiner as the 1st one had retired. I asked for the same woodstain, to match the front door. After...

    Radiator Bleed valve

Becoming increasing hard to bleed the rad as the valve has got worn so the key slips. If I turn off the valves at the bottom either end I assume just a little water will come out if I remove the valve completely? If I then take it to plumbers merchants, are they likely to have a replacement?

    painting lead

I've been here around 15 years and have never got to the bottom of why a section of wall (see picture) is covered with lead flashing. Various builders, decorators etc have scratched their heads over the years but without an answer. Everyone has agreed however that's it's best to leave it where...

    sourcing a gas valve

A update to close things off: I discovered my dad has 'Home Emergency' cover as part of his buildings insurance. Rang them and they sent an engineer out today. Gas valve is fine! Problem was 'thermo coupler' (whatever that is) which he had on the van. Sorted! Letter of complaint going out...

    sourcing a gas valve

It'll be a toss-up which goes first: dad or the boiler. At that age you can't predict either........ Many thanks for all the contributions.

    sourcing a gas valve

Thanks guys. I think part of the cost was because Building Regs have changed so lots of new wiring needed, flue etc, but even so, yes, a ridiculous price. Searched online and found...

    sourcing a gas valve

My elderly father phoned as his boiler gave up. He had an engineer round who diagnosed a faulty gas valve, but said they were now unobtainable. The boiler IS old (not quite as old as dad!), but I suspect the engineer was keen to get the £5000 he quoted for a new boiler........ If a new boiler...
