Re-run gas supply to boiler - options

Hi, We live in a listed building, so are restricted in what we're allowed to do with regards to new pipework, etc. We have a minor issue in that there's a slight drop in gas pressure between the meter and the boiler. We had a plumber round recently to fix a water leak who was a little...

    New fabric covered wiring

Thanks for the offer to sell the flex. I need 10m. Is it twisted, or round? It's two conductors and earth, right? I tried 'start a conversation' so we could work out the details privately but the site said I wasn't allowed to do that. Thanks

    New fabric covered wiring

Do you have any good suppliers for 'old wood' (My house 'first appeared on a map' around 1640)? There are loads of things I'd like to do in my house, if I can find a good supplier (don't want to get too far off topic though.... :) ). Thanks for all the ideas. I think that the brown fabric flex...

    New fabric covered wiring

Good idea, thanks. It's about 5m long. Cutting/grooving/fixing batten is more work than I'm willing to put in right now, I also think it would look a little strange, modern wood fixed to the old beams. Access above the ceiling is not really possible, but I don't think it would help anyway...

    New fabric covered wiring

It does, but someone's already tried to colour the existing white cable with brown paint/stain/something... it looks terrible. It's easier and quicker to just buy brown cable, no? I should also mention that I'm moving the light fixture, which requires me to re-run the cable anyway, I'm not...

    New fabric covered wiring

Sure could... but they're a little OTT for me, and I'm a little short of time right now though, so cable clips are probably the way I'll go. :) The plan is to try and hide the wiring as much as possible, so brown wire and brown clips will do fine. I'd use standard cable if it came in brown...

    New fabric covered wiring

Thanks. I was planning to use brown cable clips, unless that's unsafe? Or you have a better suggestion? These are a bit over the top for me... and very expensive. :) http://www.urbancottageindustries.com/historic-lighting/lighting-accessories/cable-management

    New fabric covered wiring

Thanks - looks good. Is this cable suitable for my use case? Running from the switch, along the ceiling to the rose, and then on to the other rose?

    New fabric covered wiring

Hi, I'm looking to replace some old, white, Twin & Earth Cable (black and red) which supplies two ceiling lights in my living room. The house is old, with exposed wooden beams and the existing wiring is just run along/over the beams. I've found this 'fabric covered' cable...

Installation of top-hung bi-fold doors - structural advice

I've done some more investigation. Bottom rolling bi-fold doors are looking about £1200 more than top hung (And there are far fewer choices available). I've also taken a look at the supporting beam and it looks like it's 100x100mm structural timber beam. I know this is a grey area, but can...

Confirm neutral wire in lighting circuit junction box

Yes, I know that. But I'm asking for confirmation that to confirm the neutral, I should look for 240v between live and neutral.

Installation of top-hung bi-fold doors - structural advice

Just had a quote of £400 from a structural engineer.... Anyone have any advice on this? What sort of support should there be above a 2m opening in a single storey, with a shallow pitch roof above?

Confirm neutral wire in lighting circuit junction box

With a voltage tester pen, with the lights switched off, the terminal with two red wires was still live.

Confirm neutral wire in lighting circuit junction box

Yep, how to test electrically? I've read online that I should use my multimeter to check for 240v between live and neutral (with power on, and lights switched off). Is that correct?

Confirm neutral wire in lighting circuit junction box

Hi, I'd like to know how to confirm the wiring in a junction box. The wiring looks like the second diagram on this page: http://www.flameport.com/electric/lighting_circuits/lighting_junction_boxes.cs4 I'd like to run a spur from this junction box through the ceiling and down to a...

Installation of top-hung bi-fold doors - structural advice

Not necessarily... what if I can quickly and easily get someone round who tells me that everything is OK and I can just have the doors installed as is? That was the whole point of my question.... to find out more about the whole process. I'm no expert and so I'm trying to find out more. Why...

Installation of top-hung bi-fold doors - structural advice

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I guess I was sort of just hoping that I could get someone round to check it out, and they would tell me that it's all OK.... :). I didn't realise that 'replacing' the doors would involve so much work. Although we are enlarging the doorway, there is already a fixed...

Installation of top-hung bi-fold doors - structural advice

Hi, We have a single storey timber-framed extension with french double doors. The roof above the double doors is double glazed. We would like to extend the door opening by 1/3rd, and install top-hung bi-fold doors. The door company mentioned that the top hung doors would add around 30kg...

Advice on heating system to use in renovated kitchen

Hi, Yep, that was what I was thinking. Option 2 above. I was wondering if anyone had experience of these retrofit systems. There are central heating flow/return pipes accessible in the kitchen so plumbing probably wouldn't be a problem. I was thinking that a 'traditional' wet UFH system...
