Fitting a curtain rail using batten

Just wondering if anyone had any advice before I embark on this. After attempting to drill holes for a new curtain rail and discovering a steel (I think) lintel, I've decided the easiest solution is to nail a 1 inch thick wooden batten with masonry nails into the wall and screw a simple curtain...

Replacing old toilet siphon. Sealant required?

As requested, a new thread :) I am about to embark on replacing the siphon on a crappy old Fordham Flush Panel (Plumbase say they can order one in for me). I've already taken out the old one to have a look at it as I was going to replace the diaphragm but the assembly can't be taken apart...

    replacing wc siphon

Sorry - I just thought as I'm asking a very similar question it would be better to 'recycle' an existing thread. Other messagebaords seem to encourage this, I dunno. Are you saying I should use some kind of sealant on the inside when fitting a new siphon?

    replacing wc siphon

Bumping a old thread here... When fitting a new replacment siphon what kind of sealant - if any - is required and how should it be applied? I notice my old one has a bit of sealant (or something) around the edge where the siphon joins the down pipe (on the inside of the cistern I mean...

    euro-profile locks

Swapping the cylinder shouldn't require a locksmith - it is usually a case of unscrewing just one screw, measuring the old cylinder accurately and inserting the new cylinder in its place. I have also heard that Chubb have a new range of cylinders that are meant to be very good.

    Choosing a Combi Boiler

I'm just reviving this old thread to see what people's opinions are now. Lots of negative views of combis but the thread was from 2004. Are they still considered as unreliable these days? Have there been any new models recently that improve reliablility? I still want to switch my...

Need fix-it for poor flushing, old (70s) toilet

Thanks, I might try this. What does the diaphragm actually look like and where is it in the siphon mechanism?

Need fix-it for poor flushing, old (70s) toilet

Hi there, yes that is exactly it. Is Fordham Flush panel the name of the cistern itself? So therefore I am looking for a replacement siphon to fit a Fordham Flush Panel?

Rolltop baths: Acrylic ok or is metal still best?

Thanks. The 'cold to the touch' and weight issues (might need reinforced floor) means I think I'll go for an acrylic.

Need fix-it for poor flushing, old (70s) toilet

I have a toilet with an old, plastic cistern which apparently was quite common in the 70s - it's a thin cistern and the flush is a large push down button. The siphon has a lever mechanism that turns the downwards push into an upwards pull on the flush. The flush is very poor on it now -...

Rolltop baths: Acrylic ok or is metal still best?

I'm debating whether to get a rolltop 'free standing' style bath but 99% of the ones I've seen on sale seem to be made of acrylic and I had the idea of a metal one in mind. Iron ones are more expensive but is this because they are genuilnely better or is it just because they are rarer/more...

Is there a shortage of Hotpoint washing machines right now?

After deciding on a particular model of Hotpoint washing machine I began the usual internet search for a supplier. For some reason many of the big stores are saying several models of Hotpoint washing machines are out of stock or unavailable. In the end I placed an order with a well known...

Is it easy to replace a uPVC multipoint lock?

Thanks for the info. No, I"m thinking in terms of a new property and changing the old locks over for new ones, just for security/peace of mind. I think the doors are fairly new so there should be a good chance of getting the exact same mechanism. Assuming I get the correct part, I guess is...

Is it easy to replace a uPVC multipoint lock?

is changing the multipoint lock on a fairly standard uPVC front door something anyone can do? I intend to order a lock from this place http://www.multipointlocks.co.uk/ and fit it myself to save having to call a locksmith. I'm assuming there won't be anything more difficult to do than...
