Wrong!! I had 2 DHCP servers on my LAN and 1 set of computers could not see the other set, until I disabled DHCP on 1 of my routers. However in this case all still had internet as that was not my issue

Why does it need to act as a DHCP if its already plugged into one?

Nobody has mentioned the DHCP, both devices will try to act as a DHCP server. If you leave you VM modem as the DHCP server you will need to disable it on the router thus making you router act just as a switch. If your still having issues post up the model of your DLink

Just an afterthought how big is the C drive and how much of it has been used. A flat install of Windows 7 comes in around 8-12 Gig. If there is not much space left on C it could easily get filled up again
