    US to UK 'transformer'

If you are willing to do some work. I.e putting it in a box etc. Have a look here http://www.airlinktransformers.com/stepupstepdown-transformers.asp These are auto-transformers that do not provide any isolation between input/output as most do. They are smaller, cheaper and more efficient...

    Anyone know about AC motors?

No!, these things must be mounted as close to the motor as possible to be effective. Frank

    Crimps what do you think

I have seen many failed crimped joints but not as many as I have seen failed "screwed" joints on terminals. The max size joint you can crimp depends on the size of your "tool" :D :D Frank

    SDS+ drill recommendations?

Cheap SDS drills may in fact be worse than your old B&D. They have a slipping clutch to stop you overloading the motor which makes using a core drill almost impossible. Frank

PAT Testing: What equipment to buy?

I think that this would fit the bill - bit beyond your £500 budget I'm afraid. http://www.pat-training.co.uk/seaward_pat1000s_pat_tester.htm I'm sure you won't need to do the toilet hand driers as these are fixed equipment ;-) Frank

    Wiring 240v GU10 spotlights

My 4x4m kitchen has 4x standard downlight fittings which originally had R63 reflector lamps. I replaced the lamps with 20w CFL spiral lamps. The light output is fantastic and very diffuse. I think that anything called a "spotlight" is going to do just that. The lighting maybe very bright but...

Can you Recomend me a Installation Tester

Why don't you enquire of Fluke, Megger and Metrel to find out what their standard repair charge is? I'm sure any of them would be fine but this may just sway things... Just a thought. Frank

What are my chances of being able to pull Cat5 thru mains

Absolutely no chance... sorry. [/url] I suspect that this will be too costly due to the number required. Put the cat5 in onece and for-all. Frank

    Extension Test Leads

Agreed, make your own out of flex. If using a long extension for earth loop measurement, calibrate the lead just before making the measurement as temperature can affect its resistance. Frank

Mcb tripping, doing my bulb in !!

It could be the switch-on surge of the heat lamps is tripping the breakers. This will be many times the running current but will last only momentarily. If the MCB's are type B, then fitting type C should help if this is the case. Frank

Bosch DMF 10 Zoom Multi Detector

I have one. It works OK for wire tracing and can even find the plasterboard nails in a stud partition wall. However, mine is just about useless at finding studs which is supposed to be its main function in life. Frank
