    HELP, carpet fitter damage?

I went to Carpetright years ago and asked for a price. We greed on a price and I paid a deposit. They then send someone to check my measurements and he tried to increase the price as I got it all wrong. I got my deposit back and a small local company supplied and laid the carpet...

    vertical lining paper

I'm coming back onto this post as I am getting close to having all the artex removed and being ready to line paper the walls. I will line them horizontally. I have two questions. How do I go round an internal corner. Do I take the lining paper about 50mm onto the next wall and start the paper...

How to fix SWA to a wall

I'm not even considering touching it. It is above a ceiling and the only way to get at it would involve taking down the ceiling so it can stay as they left it. I expected to see it neatly clipped to the wall, not just with one fixing in a 4 metre run, it has been like that for over 20 years so...

How to fix SWA to a wall

I live in a first floor flat and am doing some decorating. I removed a panel above the door at the top of my stairs and could see the area above the stairs. I was interested to see how the SWA cable that supplies my electric meter is attached to the wall. I'm not going to let the DNO fix it...

Broken borrowed tool - please help

I agree, a local blacksmith would weld it back together for not a lot of money.

    vertical lining paper

I’ve started to strip off old artex from my hall. It is coming off reasonable easily using a heat gun and a narrow scrapper. There are odd patches that I’ll need to fill but most of the walls are sound but not very even. As it was built in 1905 it has seen a lot of life. I’d like to finish...

    DD GR10q 4 pin LED

Thanks. How did I miss that? I use CEF so should have looked at them. The advantage of changing the "tubes" is that if I do a few at a time they will still look the same. If I change the whole fitting I'd need to do them all to keep them looking reasonably...

    DD GR10q 4 pin LED

Thanks RF for replying. I know none of them are emergency lights. They have starters that look like the starters in a "normal" fluorescent batten fitting. They are roughly 20 years old if that gives any idea of what they will be.

    DD GR10q 4 pin LED

I want to replace some fluorescent D shaped tubes with LED. They are in the entrance foyer and the toilets of a church. I've fitted PIR sensors as people kept leaving the lights on. I'd like LEDs as they use less electricity and start virtually instantly. I know that I'd need to change the...

    Fixing Wooden Gate

Why not ask your neighbour if you can fix the post the their wall? That would be easiest way. If not dig a hole and concrete in a post.

oil finish on wood not drying (2)

I left it overnight and it dried to a matt finish. I threw away the rest of that tin of oil and opened a new tin (the old one had been opened two years ago when the kitchen was fitted). I gave the surfaces a coat with oil from the new tin and they look good and are nearly dry after 3 hours...

oil finish on wood not drying (2)

Thanks, That is helpful. Knowing that white spirit is the right solvent will be a big help if I need to clean it all off tomorrow. (I finished oiling it all at 12:45 and it is now 20:35 so I'll leave it overnight).

Yes I shook the tin of oil.

oil finish on wood not drying (2)

It is straight from the tin so no thinners. I just painted it on in a thin layer as if I was painting the surface. This is exactly the same as I've done a few times before. As I've done the same several times I can't understand why this time has gone wrong.

oil finish on wood not drying (2)

The oil has been in the tin container it came in, and has been stored in the kitchen cupboard so should not have been subjected to extreme temperatures.

oil finish on wood not drying (2)

I posted this on the decorating forum but had no response so I thought I might get advice on DIY Disasters I treated my kitchen worktops with Howden's Prime Worktop Oil 7 hours ago. I did it exactly as I've done 4 or 5 times since the worktops were fitted two years ago. It has not dried, it is...

    Papering over old backing paper

Could you do one wall at a time and cross line each wall. I mean put up lining paper horizontally. You might need to go slightly round each corner and I'd rather cross ine the whole room and then paper rather than papering a single wall.

    job quote

The only way to check is to ask another local electrician for a quote. If you want to get three quotes that would be reasonable but in my opinion for a small job like that any more than three is wasting people's time quoting. It is impossible to tell on a forum like this how easy, or difficult...
