    4.6kw Water heater on a 10amp fuse??!!

Yes it's in Germany, sorry I meant to say that as well. I'm more curious as to what the pitfalls are from continuing to run this water heater through this fuse. Should I just leave it? Simon

    4.6kw Water heater on a 10amp fuse??!!

How come I am able to run a 4.6kw instant water heater on a 10amp fuse in the fusebox?? I can't understand how this works, even when the heater is running for five minutes and has been used on and off for the past 10 days!? Simon.

    Does Neutral really equal Earth??

So nothing too much to worry about then? This flat is indeed in East Germany so I guess that explains some of it. Do you think the wire in the bathroom was once connected to a water pipe, as opposed to a shower tray? In this case would it be foolish to connect it to the new shower tray which...

    Does Neutral really equal Earth??

I'm renovating a flat in Germany (built in 1958) and I was disappointed to find that the entire electrics have been wired with two wires, and no earth wire. At the sockets they have put a small wire loop connecting the neutral terminal to the earth terminal. My question is, is this safe...

    Horrible old pipe (with photo)

Hi, I`ve managed to take a photo of this horrible old pipe with holes in it that we`ve found in this old flat in Germany. My friend has already filled it with bitumen(!), but what I really want to do is to stick a flexible 4cm wide pipe down inside this old pipe as far as I can go...

    Bitumen as a pipe sealant?

Very interesting, thanks for the replies. Good point regarding bitumen softening at a high temperature...I wonder if this will be a problem or not!! The pipe I believe is cast iron and is just crumbling away. Doesn´t look very good for the next ten or twenty years in my opinion. Simon.

    Bitumen as a pipe sealant?

Hi, I`m working on a property at the moment which was built in 1958 and is a small flat in a large block. Unfortunately the problem with this flat is the drainage pipes are all rusting very badly, and as we pulled the old basin out the waste pipe just fell apart. There was basically a...

Using 2x2.5mm cables to make a 5mm cable?

Thanks for all the replies. In this case i think I´ll just let him get on with it if it isn´t dangerous. This is a German flat built in 1959 and I´m really surprised with the electrics. All the sockets are connected with two wire 1.5mm cable which is fixed to the wall with a nail in the...

Using 2x2.5mm cables to make a 5mm cable?

Hi, I´m in Germany doing some renovating and we´re installing an instant hot water heater that is using 4.6kw of electricity. When we went to the local shed they didn´t seem to sell any cables bigger than 2.5mm. My German friend said "no problem" let´s use two 2.5mm cables and then we...

    Search Functionality

This is still a problem. The search functionality is very important to me as I find it often helps me find solutions to my problems. Not being able to search for all items makes it very very very difficult. I hope this will be fixed soon! Simon.

Old electrics with no earth? with/PIC

Here's another socket if it helps: My friend has bought this old property as an investment to let to students and asked me to take a look at it. He's been advised for a total rewire. Currently the wires just round around the house clipped to the top of the skirting. Simon.

Old electrics with no earth? with/PIC

My friend has just bought an old council flat with some weird electrics. There doesn't even appear to be a way to earth his sockets? Does he need a total rewire? Simon.

    Couple of easy(?) waste questions

Why, what's wrong with the junction box? It's okay to have a socket and a plug under the kitchen sink according to the people that replied to my question last year: http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16328 Simon.

    Couple of easy(?) waste questions

Help! I've got a problem. If you see the T-join in the bottom right of the picture, it turns out the pipe to the shower is 42mm, and the pipe up to the basin is 32mm, and the pipe to the right measures between 52mm and 55mm. I can't seem to find any fittings for a 52mm pipe anywhere...

    Couple of easy(?) waste questions

This is what the builders did. The house is only a year old so is it ok with the regs to plumb a shower trap with a 32mm pipe? To the right of the basin plumbing the waste pipe is 40mm, then they reduced the rest of the pipes to 32mm for some reason. What I want to do is cut back the...

    Couple of easy(?) waste questions

Just a couple of things I'm struggling with. Is it okay to use an anti-vac bottle trap instead of an S-trap? Can two basins and a shower be plumbed into the same 32mm waste pipe that leads to the soil stack? I'm replacing my basins at the moment and need to make sure that what I'm doing...

    Waste pipe flow limits

Can I connect two basins and a shower to a 32mm waste pipe? What if it was just two basins on a 32mm waste pipe? If it was ok to do the above, then should I put antivac traps on the basins as sometimes the shower (which is already plumbed in) gurgles when the toilet is flushed. Waste...
