    Joining Cat 5 cable

I've used them loads in commercial networks, brilliant when you need to join two cables. The company i worked for paid £6+VAT for each one though from their supplier (computerland) lol RJ11 to RJ45 for phones are also handy.

    Offered Something Else Besides Money

LMAO - I started a rewire that took 2 weeks and not once did i get offered a cuppa, when i was starting on the kitchen circuits i told her i'd be turning them off and she said oh wait 2 mins i'm just gonna make a cuppa. I stood there and once the kettle was boiled she said ok you can turn them...

Main Stopcock - The hot water stops but not the cold!?

My friend has a stopcock in his hall near the front door, when you turn it to the closed position the hot water stops but not the cold water. Should there be another stopcock because if there is he cant find it, or is there something else that needs to be done to isolate the cold supply? He has...

Bonding Main Water - Distance Question

Again i cant run trunking outside - shes dead adament of having nothing visible. Would i be in breach of the building regs if the board was changed with the departure noted? Or is simply no bonding upgrade within 600mm = no consumer unit change?

Bonding Main Water - Distance Question

Went to a job today for a new consumer unit. The bonding for the gas & water needs to be upgraded. Now the customer has just had the kitchen done which is where the mains stopcock is located (under the sink), and doesnt want any cables/trunking present on her new kitchen or anything knocked out...

    Fire rated downlights

I was under the impression that they were needed if someone is living in the room above i.e. bedroom - that was confirmed when my assessor asked me about fire barriers :?

    wall uplighters

you normally put the screws in the wall 1st leaving about 1/2 inch sticking out of the wall, you then place the uplighter onto the screws and it should drop down to fix

    Replacing an old meter?

ring your supplier up and ask them to fit an isolator switch as your planning on having a rewire done and ask for your meter to be upgraded to a digital one too. When they fit the isolator switch they will also install your new meter - as for charge it depends where you live, its ranges from...

    Solder v Compression v Pushfit

IMO solder is the best, i have been to alot of leaks due to plastic push fit not being fitted correctly. Went to a job last week, the guy had been away for the week, came back to a flood - the whole cavity under his house was completely full of water - must have been 2ft deep. Nice insurance job...

    rcd on rcd

i was told that by my lecturer years ago that using a plug in RCD on a RCD protected circuit could make both of them useless for RCD protection as they counter each other. I'm not sure how though :?

    Triton Spellbind shower tripping RCD

A 9.5Kw should be on 10mm cable with a 40A breaker or even a 32A if poss taking diversity into account. 6mm on a 50A breaker will have melted the cable as its undersized  Using that shower on a 6mm is a fire risk! Run a new 10mm cable from your consumer unit to the shower and...

    Replace Consumer Unit (photo included!)

From what i've quickly read your paying Building Control £120 and supplying the board and bits (approx £80-£100) so all in all just over £200. Why not get a spark in and do the lot for £300-£350 including parts - at least you know everythings done properly and tested, certificated and notified...
