    Raising a garage floor

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help. I am about to convert my garage into a bedroom. The garage has a concrete floor, as does the rest of the house. Obviously I want to raise the floor of the new bedroom to match the rest of the house. The garage floor is 155mm below that of the...

    Anyone used IKEA engineered flooring

I did the whole of the living areas and bedrooms in their oak engineered wood- think it's called LAKT. When done it looked really good. The wood top layer is very thin, but they do offer a 10 year guarantee, so I guess they must be confident in it's durability. There was a slight problem...

    kitchen cupboards

Hi, I am re-doing my kitchen, and I can't find any advice for a suitable gap between the bottom of the wall units and the worktop. Anyone care to enlighten me? Thanks in advance Andy

    What am i doing wrong?

As a totally non expert tiler, I found it easier to lay a solid bed of adhesive, then use the notches on the trowel to cut the grooves out of the solid bed, if that makes sense! Hope that is helpful.

    Fire Hazard?

The low energy halogen replacements are a great idea- thanks. Didn't know they existed!

    Fire Hazard?

There are no brand marks on the lights, nor instructions. The lights were in situ when I bought the house. I am guessing that neither plasterboard nor fibre glass insulation is especially flammable, but I don't want to burn the place down!

    Fire Hazard?

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help. I am wondering if I am inadvertantly causing a fire hazard in my kitchen. We are replacing it and have removed the suspended false marble ceiling that was in place. The actual ceiling is about 150mm higher, but was in very poor condition, so I have...

    Time to change my plan?

Thank for that- I'm pretty clear about what I am doing now.

    Time to change my plan?

Sorry Freddie, but just to clarify........ If I wanted to I could lay a DPM on the concrete floor, then lay out some 5*2 joists on the DPM. The joists can be fixed to the walls, and between them I can build up 5" of Kingspan. I can then nail some ply or chipboard flooring across the top...

    Time to change my plan?

Thanks for that.........even though it was your link that blew my plan out of the water!! Rather than screeding the top of the insulation could I either lay chip/ply as a floating floor, or actually go back to something close to my original plan and run a few joists around and nail...

    Impending disaster?

The house was built in the mid 80's. We have had a CH engineer in recently to look at a motor that was broken, and he described the CH as "the way he would have put it into his own house" so I am confident we don't have a cowboy job on the system. In which case am I correct in thinking the...

    Impending disaster?

Thanks for a very speedy reply. Now maybe I have completely misunderstood how the CH works, but isn't it one single big loop of pipe passing through the various radiators? If so wouldnt capping the pipes just stop the water at that point? I have no intention of replacing the radiator...

    Impending disaster?

I am about to replace my kitchen, and I have a radiator that I don't want, so I want to remove it. The CH is run off a combi boiler. Here's the plan. 1) Drain as much water as possible from the CH system. 2) Take off the radiator, catching any other water draining out of the system. 3)...

    Time to change my plan?

Hi all, and thanks in advance for your time. I am planning a garage conversion, and need to raise the floor by 150mm. The floor is concrete at the moment, and is in good condition and flat. My original plan was to simply lay 5*2 joists on the floor, on top of a DPM and then put...

    suspended timber ground floor

Don't really think laying a solid floor (I assume you are talking about concrete) is something I am comfortable with taking on myself. Are you saying you can't raise a floor 6" with a suspended timber floor?

    suspended timber ground floor

That PDF gives me (potentially) a massive headache. I am going to convert my garage into a bedroom, and the floor is currently concrete, but 6" below the level of the rest of the house. My simple plan was to suspend 4*2 joists across the 4.5m span- supporting them in the middle (and...

    Kitchen Advice please

Just bought a nice Wickes one. How much difference is there between that and a more expensive one- far too early to tell. Be prepared to haggle though- it made a big difference to the price we paid! I went to infinity, and the price difference was HUGE! I am sure plenty of people will...
