Tips for installing a new PVCU window into a new opening

Thanks noseal, good to know what others do. Would be good to get otherpeoplesopinion as well, only because my research showed both options. Regards Mac

Tips for installing a new PVCU window into a new opening

Hi Guys, Weekends job is to install my first PVCU window into the opening of the new extension. Standard kitchen style window. Has anyone got any useful pointers before I jump in. I have read a few diy type websites and have found varying advice, which sometimes differs. The two main...

    Quantities for concrete oversite

Thanks noseal. So two bulk bags would be more than enough. Potty I can't get half bags.. Possibly a bunch of small bags for the half.

    Quantities for concrete oversite

Hi Guys, Not quite sure how to calculate these quantities and how water affects the volume of dry mix vs wet mix. I have an area of app 2.7m x 5.5m that I need to place a thin amount of oversite concrete on. Roughly 14.85 square metres and about 50mm thick of concrete. How much...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Thanks oldun, Used my laser level last night and looks like the base of joists can sit directly on a mortar bed in the AAC block. This seems like a better base than a thin section of the block, but not sure it really matters? They seem good under compression. There is something I forgot...

    Floor joist specification

Woody, I really don't want to build a sleeper wall. That is my question here. The architect has specified timber dimensions with a sleeper wall. I want to know if I can increase the timber dimensions and avoid. Guessing from your answer that I can. Cheers

    Floor joist specification

Okay, dimensions for walls are the same as for ceiling, i.e. 5.7m from outside to outside minus 600mm for walls. The projection outwards is 3m to the outside wall, minus 300mm for the wall. The depth to sub ground is tough as the sub ground is up and down at the moment. That's this weekends...

    Floor joist specification

Oldun, Thanks for that, I think. Will get the dimensions to you asap. Not sure how asking if the joist size I was specified is ideal is a c*ck up, but no doubt you will elaborate. Unless you are saying this because I have chosen suspended timber rather than solid concrete slab. If so...

    Floor joist specification

Thanks Deluks. So sleeper wall with these joists is best, not larger joists, without a sleeper wall?

    Floor joist specification

Oldun or anyone else. I thought I'd best place another post rather than carry on from the roof post. Should open the advice up to anyone searchign in future. I have the plans that my 'architects technician' drew up and reading the spec for the floor joists, he has suggested 95 x 47 joists at...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Oldun, that is some impressive advise. Donation will be arranged tomorrow. Any specific heroes fund? Your advice will take some digesting, already read it 3 times and it is now becoming clearer. I've just had a roofer over to quote on the finishing and his suggestion was to cut slots with an...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

No worries, anything helps. Would be good to know that I'm okay telling the brickies that they can do both outer dense in inner thermalite skins up to top of parapet level. I assume that one way or another the joists can be hung.attached to the wall. Regards mac

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Sorry, I forgot that part. The total width of outer skin to outer skin is 5.7m minus 300 on each side for blocks and cavity. The depth from house is 3m to outside wall. Hope this is enough?

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Oldun, Thanks for that. Too late to turn back now. Parapet it is and the main reason is appearance. To me, nothing looks worse than a sloping flat roof where you can see the roof felt. The parapet will have a copping on it and the top of the block work is roughly 22 inches higher than the...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Woody, I appreciate your advice and perhaps reality check. I do tend to get carried away, like removing all render and ceilings from upstairs, instead of just skimming over. I have a tendency of wanting things done 'properly', which in hind sight is pointless if we won't live here forever. If...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Many thanks all and look forward to oldun's response. Alastair,I wish I had seen that document a long time ago. From what I can make sense of, For a flat roof, c16 38 by 147 at 500 spacings would meet regs. Am I creating unnecessary overkill by thinking that 47 by 145 at maybe 500 or 600...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Thanks all, Not sure if my additional question above was missed, but in case: "Sorry for throwing this into the same post, but for an extension of 3m, hence joists spanning 3m, what joist size would you recommend for a warm deck flat roof? There will be 2 velux sealed skylights 1m x 1m...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Thanks Guys. Sorry for throwing this into the same post, but for an extension of 3m, hence joists spanning 3m, what joist size would you recommend for a warm deck flat roof? There will be 2 velux sealed skylights 1m x 1m each. I plan to use timber plates, the same size as the joists and...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Sorry woody, not sure if there was some sarcasm there or I just misunderstood :D Clearly I don't want a sloping ceiling, as it's a flat roof, if "looks neither here nor there" you mean that the slope will not be noticeable, then that is an option. I guess another option would be to trim the...

Flat roof gradient - firrings or offset joists

Hi Guys, Can someone tell me if it is best to use firrings on top of the joists or actually offset the joists to get the run-off on a flat roof. Mine will have a parapet around it, running off to the alley with a small hole in the parapet into a down pipe and away. It would be easy...
