    Cable size for downlights

Thanks Phat-boy, that's a nice straight forward answer that I was hoping for from a DIY formum. Not like ban-all-sheds who seems to be on a war path. For some very strange reason and I can only think he has a lot of time on his hands, he is searching through other threads of mine 5 months old...

Can you change controller without changing thermostat wire

You bored ban-old-sheds? You seem to have searched through 5 month old threads to put in a rather pointless 2 cents worth. Not sure I see the point in what you said, but hey ho, each to them self. Lastly, before telling me "It's hard to hear anything when you don't listen", why don't you...

    Cable size for downlights

Because he's away and it's bugging me. I thought someone answering in the electrics forum would know the answer to a question like that...

    Cable size for downlights

Hi Guys, Have I caused myself or the electrician any problems by running 1.5mm twin & earth between downlight locations. I suddenly thought this may be too large a cable (if using a transformer). I thought that's what the electrician told me to do very early on in my renovations. He is a...

Cutting down an existing door frame

Hi guys, I have an odd scenario where I gutted all but one of the rooms in my upstairs, which included some new stud walls, all new door frames and much more. In hind sight I should have thought of this earlier, but because I hadn't tackled the one bedroom and we had family comign to stay...

    Chimney Breast removal

Tim, You seem to have misunderstood my post. I wouldn't necessarily consider it advise as much as my experience. The 'Stuarts' :D asked whether anyone would recommend taking on the job themseleves or getting someone in to do it. As I had just done mine myself, I was just sharing my project...

    Chimney Breast removal

Tim, As you say all councils are diferent. Merton in London and many other London councils seems more than happy with gallows brackets (of the right spec) to be placed in the loft. They specified resin set bolts so as not to blow the brick with rawl bolts. I ended up using resin set on the...

    Chimney Breast removal

I'm not a builder, but consider myself to be a competent DIYer and have just removed 1 of our 2 chimney breasts. As the previous post stated, each council has it's own regulations and a quick internet search reveals loads of advice. I believe most councils will allow for gallows brackets and...

    Extending central heating pipes

Hi Guys, As part of some building work at home, I have removed a chimney breast in a bedroom that originally had the radiator attached to it. I have capped the old 15mm pipes and have the floor boards up. The new location for the radiator is in the bay under the window. Question is: is...

To grease or not to grease

Hi Guys, Just been reading up on this and there seem to be dif views, so thought I'd ask the people who are likely to use SDS drills most frequently. I have a bosch SDS drill. Nothing massive but a decent size and has been a massive help over the last few years while stripping my house...

Creating a solid level base on floor board

Hi guys, I realise this may be a pointless exercise and if convinced will drop the idea all together. I've stripped back a room and had it re rendered and skimmed. Also took out the chimney breast in order to make that wall more usable. The plan is to replicate built in wardrobes, but using...

Planning ahead - laying tv aerial under render

Hi Guys, New here so please be patient. Hoping for some advise on TV aerials. We are in the middle of renovating our 3 bed semi. Render is off most of the walls and I want to use the opportunity to lay tv aerials around the house with connection points in all the possible places. I...

Fitting extractor fan in air vent opening in bathroom

Last time I did this in a flat I cut a piece of ply the size of the air brick and cut a round hole in it to fit the extractior into. Placed this half way into the thickness of the wall. This at least meant there was no air flow around the extractor and it did it's job most effectively.

Base of fireplace on 2nd floor

Hi Guys, Just removed a chimney breast from the loft downwards on the front side of the house. Well, just removed the 2nd floor for now, downstairs will follow. Used gallows brackets with resin set bolts and pre stressed concrete lintel. Messy, but good fun.. Q, what is likely to support...

    Fitting RSJ

Hi Angler, I've been reading your post as I will soon be doing something similar, but a little surprised by your solution. Are you saying that a steel beam roughly 4.5m is only sitting on the single brick (your side of a party wall with neighbours) with no pillar or anything else? I'm a...

Air difuser for in line ducted extractor

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a decent looking difuser for my bathroom ceiling extractor. It's an inline - i.e. will have ducting to the unit. I have looked around on the internet and B&Q and only found crappy looking plastic. It's nice new modern bathroom and I want something nice -...

    Extractor fan ducting

Hi Guys, Can anyone tell me what is best to use for extractor fan ducting? This is an in line fan mounted in the loft for the bathroom. You seem to get aluminium ducting, insulated versions, white equivelants that seem cheap and I suppose you could use stiff piping? Also, popped into the...
