    Magnetic filters

Hi I was wondering if anyone ever removes these from central heating sytems after a couple of years. Ive come across a couple about 2-3 years old recently with the joints leaking when the filter itself is relatively clean. I'm thinking the filter has already done its job and the system should...

    Gas fire or Electric Fire

I find I need to use the gas fire in my lounge to counteract the cold air coming down the flue in winter. I'm sure the radiator would cope if I removed the fire and blocked the flue up. However it is attractive and my wife really likes it. I think the flame effect of the modern electric fires...

Leaking push-fit. Help needed with insurance claim.

Fair point kirkgas. I was thinking more of the different types of pushfit fittings which have sprung up in recent years as opposed to traditional end feed and compression etc. I can imagine that some systems will eventually prove more problematic than others. I'm not sure how bartol has stood...

Leaking push-fit. Help needed with insurance claim.

Hi Push fit is still a relatively new technology compared to traditional fittings so there is no telling how reliable they will be viewed in the coming years. Can I ask if the insurance claim is via house insurance or he plumber's insurance?

    Setting up Gas boiler

Hi If budget is a consideration the call to BG may not be wise. Finding a reliable local Gassafe registered individual or company to visit and go through different options would be your best move.

    radiator sizes

Is the problem that all of the radiators in the house heat up fully but are not able to keep some of the rooms warm enough? Or is it that some of the radiators themselves do not heat up fully?

    Shower cold pressure too low

Hi Can you swap the hot and cold feeds over at the pump and see if you get the same problem except too cold rather than too hot. Would then indicate a blocked pipe or blocked feed at the shower. Best check with the MI of the shower first.

    Central Heating layout incorrect

Thanks Chris I checked the manual and it says 1.0 bar pressure required - must not fall below 0.5 bar. Interestingly the boiler has a low pressure warning light which remains off. Theres only 6 radiators on the system which struggled to warm up last winter. While the boiler probably needs a...

    Central Heating layout incorrect

Hi Has anyone ever come across a boiler that should be pressurised with a filling loop but instead is linked up to a header tank in the loft. The boiler - a Ferroli Tempra 12 perhaps 10 years old - still works though not too well. Of course cannot be pressurised anywhere near to where it...

Plumber said it was OK to turn water on. £35K damage...

An unfortunate story. Legally there would be problems proving the plumber said it was alright to turn the water on - it could end up in a his word against yours situation. In any case thinking of it from a fairness point of view it could be argued the plumber is responsible for the first five...

    Is Plumber at Fault?

Hi I'm still a bit confused as to what actually went on here. Originally "...A few days later and the toilet blocked up, it had never done before but plumber could not clear block" And later "...I think the plumber is a nice guy but when I pointed out it was blocked he did not look at it"...

    Is Plumber at Fault?

If the plumber fitted the bath waste and it was working and it was not causing any other problems on completion so far so good. If he was called back because the toilet later blocked and the bath waste still worked and the waste connection was unaccessible its difficult to say he did anything...

    Hot water dead leg

Im sure youre right about the power ianniann. That may be the basis for the advice that has been offered. Yet many people are happy with electric showers as sales figures prove. In this case there may be a preference for an (almost) instantaineous supply of hot water to the bathroom without the...

    Hot water dead leg

No need to apologise. It is not always easy to get your head around these things. This means that you have a combi boiler so the hot water in the bathroom will be at more or less mains pressure. However it has to push 20-25 meters of cold (I doubt stagnant) water out of the way and then heat...

    Hot water dead leg

Hi My understanding of a dead leg is a length of pipe which goes nowhere and is capped off. You say you have one but your description does not explain where it is. Do you mean instead that you have a long length of hot water pipe that could be reduced in length? I would not say that mixer...

Compression fitting. Pipe not pushed home into fitting

While pipes should be fully pushed into compression fittings before tightening you find plenty when stripping pipework that were never pushed fully in and never leaked. To be honest I cannot see how it would leak now assuming the olive was tightened onto the pipe and not just the lip of it. An...
