Building blocks - which density ?

Thanks Julio. I'll be using these blocks to close off a doorway in a block and brick cavity wall - the lintel will remain in place, so I guess the lower spec blocks are the ones I need to use. How do the 7 Newton and 3.5 Newton blocks equate to the Medium and Low Density blocks that you see...

    Brick Spacing (A solution - I think!)

Cemesphere, Coming from a fellow patent-er, I like your approach. Nice to see a forum like this used for new ideas that could the people this forum is here for. I think you've hit the nail on the head here - it's for the DIYer and not the seasoned bricky. If you're building a small...

    Moisture Barrier?

Steven, Cladding, not flooring, right ? If so, I think you could just install a polythene sheet between the new cladding and the wall and under the bottom of the cladding to stop anything coming up off the floor. If interior wood is rotting, you shouldn't have that amount of damp inside and...

    Lintels

Hello All, I need to install a doorway in a brick and block outside wall (the outer skin has 'soldier' bricks above the doors and windows - as usual). I intend to use a upvc door that I'm taking out from elsewhere around the house. Q1. What type of lintel should I use for the new doorway...

Building blocks - which density ?

Hi All, Can't get the search to work at the moment so I hope I'm not going over old ground! I need to block off a doorway in an outside cavity wall which is brick and block construction - which type of building blocks should I use for the inner skin? Also, could someone give a quick guide to...

    DPC

Thanks for the info guys. There's no wall below the dpc, as its on the ground floor. I guess it must be that there is a footing under the dpc and not that the wall was built on the concrete base, otherwise, why use a dpc ? Actually, I remember theres a membrane under the floor screed...

    Here's a bargain for someone!

If that was an ebay item I would leave the appropriate feedback comment to warn others of his attention to 'detail'. It reminds me of a mate who went to look at a car, he was told it was used daily. When he saw it, it was on a farm and there were chickens living in it ! :shock...

    DPC

Dear All, I've recently removed an internal block wall. All supporting work, calcs and building regs complete. At the base of the wall there was a dpc. I just want to check that the dpc needs to remain, despite the wall being gone, to protect the new floor. :?: hanks, P.J.

    Another spotlight question

Thanks for the advice dingbat. That should really be in the instructions, you'd think. Never mind, one hole drilled gives a nice blank to plug the other one, c'est la vie. Cheers, P.J.

    Another spotlight question

Hello. :D I've installed 50W mains dimmable spotlights in my kitchen. The paperwork that came with them says they should have 0.5m clear between the light and any surface, and that the void into which they're installed should be min 4 inches. Both of these are fine, but I'm concerned...

    Central Heating Controller - changing

Hi All, :D I've currently got an old gas boiler with a hot water tank in the airing cupboard. There's a controller on the front of the boiler and a thermostat on a ground floor wall. I'd like to upgrade the control system either with a wall mounted programmer, or a wireless system with 2...

    Padstones

Just for info, I've used a concrete over-door lintel, cut to length instead of padstones. Buildling regs guy said that's fine and that 200mm wasd an absolute minimum, 300mm long is preffered. Cheers, P.J. :D

Can I get plasterboard that doesn't need skimming ?

I was thinking about replacing a 3m x 4m artexed ceiling with this stuff. If it takes a pro to get a good flat finish even with tapered edge, I'm probably better going for the skim. I could end up getting the new stuff skimmed if I can't get a decent finish ! Cheers, P.J.

    Project: Kitchen sink moved

Thanks for the advice guys. I've a washing machine and dishwasher just left of the current sink position. It's sounding like I need a new drain just outside, above and to the left of the current sink position on the plan, and runn all wastes into that, then along to the current drain...

Can I get plasterboard that doesn't need skimming ?

Hi All, I think I've seen a plasterboard that is about 3mm thinner over about 50mm along the edges. Then when they butt up together, you just skim the thin bit up to the level of the rest of the board. (I'm thinking of replacing a ceiling instead of having it skimmed to remove the artex...

    Project: Kitchen sink moved

Many thanks, masona. Think I'll push ahead with the direct route and see how it goes. Planned on having floor tiles so should be sound over where the pipes are. Cheers, P.J. 8)

    Project: Kitchen sink moved

Hi masona, It will be one sink with a separate drainer, so 2 waste pipes but I guess these could be joined directly under the sink as the drainer wont be carrying away any volume of water. It's about 3 metres from the new sink position to where the sink waste currently meets the outside drain...

boiler fires up for 5 seconds then switches off

I had a similar problem when the pump was siezed. The unit was quickly overheating and then cutting out. It was accompanied by a loud crackling sound from inside the boiler which was the water boiling! Sounds a bit different to yours but I would try a bit of fault diagnosis by swapping...

    Joist support

Hi All, What can I use to pack out gaps between a new beam (supporting wall removed) and uneven joists that it is supporting ? slate ? stainless ? mortar ? Thanks, P.J.

    Project: Kitchen sink moved

Hi All, Seems to be posing a problem - I've had a think and I plan to channel the floor to run the water supply and waste together in a plastic channel. That'll mean a channel in the concrete floor of about 2 inches deep. Does anyone foresee a problem with this ? What run does the...
