Downlighters in kitchen ceiling - notifiable??

I guess "regs" is a bit strong. SI 2004:3210 refers to “kitchen” means a room or part of a room which contains a sink and food preparation facilities, and then approved document P clarifies the "part of a room" to be an area enclosing 3m from the edge of the sink. But of course part P is only...

    Recommended Electric Underfloor Heating System

My mind is clear, it's yours that seems to be struggling at the idea that a system can be BOTH water based and electrical. My statement was very clear: "if the water underfloor heating system has any electrical control then yes it is notifiable" Subsequent to that statement you...

    Recommended Electric Underfloor Heating System

Fine. As you know the statutory instruments form part of UK legislation. As an extension to the notification requirements in SI 2000 No. 2531, schedule 2B in SI 2004 No. 3210 clearly states that "an electric floor or ceiling heating system" is included in the term "special installation", and...

Downlighters in kitchen ceiling - notifiable??

IIRC the regs refer to distance from the sink, the idea being that water can splash a certain distance (3m I think). I think the rules are indeed that this work is notifiable, even if the lights had a high IP rating.

    Recommended Electric Underfloor Heating System

According to approved document P, "Electric floor or central heating systems" are special installations. IMO any underfloor heating system which is water based but has electrical control therefore counts as a special installation. So what is the basis of your disagreement? You have not explained.

    Recommended Electric Underfloor Heating System

Wrong forum for most of that, but if the water underfloor heating system has any electrical control then yes it is notifiable. Notification is to your council building control office. There is a fee that goes with it, which can be several hundred pounds. This often means that for small/simple...

Downlighters in bathroom - esp. Low energy flourescent

    1) Yes, Megaman do dimmable CFLs. However they don't dim in the traditional way. Instead they have a mode which slowly changes the brightness until you decide it is what you want. You need to consider that it takes around 1 minute for CFLs to warm up properly, so there's no point dimming them...

    Lighting Layout

Then I recommend that you do what I did and buy some cheap ones and try them out first. There are several options in terms of brightness (and consider the higher efficiency ones too) and beam angle. Also you should consider if you want task lighting or accent lighting or a combination of both...

Replace wall switches in bathroom cupboard?

If this is a structural airing cupboard then water can't get in can it? It should be unzoned or at least considered zone 3. Others may disagree?

I assume that you are doing the work yourself as a competent person but are not registered with a self-certification scheme? Officially it should be at their cost - see approved document P.

    NEW Consumer Unit

As far as version of wiring regs is concerned, that's a matter for your LBCO. Mine told be that I should work to the 16th until the 17th is in force. However of course nothing in the 16th PREVENTS you from using a CU configuration that the new guidance in the 17th promotes. I have done...

    Part P dilemma

I have to agree. If you already are worried about the load on that circuit then you shouldn't even be discussing HOW you intend to add the spur until you KNOW what the typical/maximum load is. Sounds to me like your mate would benefit from more than just a single spur added and so he'll be...

    Ceiling speakers

I'm going to fit ceiling speakers in my new home and have looked at the ones on the market - seems like you pay a premium. In my last house I put two ceiling speakers in my bedroom. I re-used a pair that had been previously installed (retrofit) in a car. IIRC I had bought them from Maplin...

    In-cabinet shaver socket

We have decided to put in-cabinet shaver sockets in our new bathrooms, having seen the one that Shades Furniture sell. It's a bit like those angled worktop or under-cabinet socket outlets that you can get for kitchens, except that they are two-pin instead of three. The problem is that the...
