Neutral wire not connected to light fitting

Thanks, It's been a long day I think I just needed it confirmed it wouldn't work like this! The 2 'Red' wires must have been connected in the terminal block as you would expect with the two blacks connecting to the light fitting.

Neutral wire not connected to light fitting

Hi, Can someone tell me if I'm going crazy here! I've just removed a set of spotlights from a ceiling and replaced with a standard pendant as it''s getting plastered. It's the last pendant on the circuit so only one feed wire in however I'm convinced the 'Neutral' circuit wire was...

    Wall & Fencing Advice Needed

Hi, I have a perimeter wall in my back garden which is about 4 ft high, it currently has fence posts fixed to the insides of the wall with approx 2ft high overlap fence panels fixed to the posts to raise the wall/fence height to approx 6ft. The fence panels are in need of replacement but...

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

After returning from work today to find missus had washer, dryer, dishwasher, router and cordless telephone all plugged into extension leads leading back to one single socket and everything was working fine without it appears overloading the circuit or blowing any of the 13a fuses (including the...

    New kitchen layout wiring/sockets/oven advice

cheers, plenty of room as cooker going in tall housing so socket can be positioned wherever I need it. Spark1 - Not installing myself but chasing all the walls out, fitting mounting boxes etc in readiness for electrician who fitted CU to run in new ring and it will be notified - just want to...

    New kitchen layout wiring/sockets/oven advice

Re. the issue of this set-up having no fusing down from 40a. Is this a problem and if so can I put a single socket in place of the cooker outlet and a plug on the end of the cooker flex to fuse down to 13a, meaning the cooker outlet could be re-instated at a later date or should I still...

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

Yes that would be far easier but I'm doing what most would recommend in having an easily accessible isolator above the counter. ColJack - Thanks again for all your advice, I like the idea of the 2 gang grid switches but can't seem to find them to exactly match the other sockets etc which have...

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

ColJack - Thanks for all your advice, I will see if I can find the 2 gang grid switches anywhere in the same finish as the sockets I've chosen - are these simply wired as individual 20a units? i.e. ring into first switch, then connected into 2nd switch inside mounting box and then ring back out...

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

Slightly off the original subject but does that mean plugging in 2 items such as a kettle (2-3kw) and a toaster (1.5kw) in the same double socket on a ring main would cause a potential problem because I would guess there's a very high proportion of people who do this every single day!

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

So would I be better off using 13a FCU's to supply the 3 pairs then? I don't really want to have 6 separate isolators around the kitchen for all of the appliances, seems a bit much, i suppose if it's only the washer and dishwasher that are a concern i could split them onto separate single...

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

Thanks, is there really much chance of the appliances I'm using drawing more than 20a? I'm sure the dryer and hob igniter will be fine, fridge freezer and microwave should be fine, only concern maybe would be the washer and dishwasher on same socket maybe? please correct me if I'm wrong...

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

Thanks for reply - what are the 20a DP switches used for then? There are many threads recommending these are used for this application as using a FCU means there are 2 13a fuses on each appliance.

Wiring of Isolators for kitchen appliances

Hi, I'm putting a new ring in kitchen and have read some conflicting advice about how isolators should be wired for under counter appliances, whether they should be wired into 13a switched FCU's or 20a DP switches feeding unswitched sockets. I don't mind which method I use as long it is fit...

Replacing huge radiator with a smaller one

That's great cheers, was going to have it removed completely to free up space as the room hardly ever cools down and radiator is never on but think i need to retain something for winter especially as i've took the fireplace out as well this weekend! Cheers again.

Replacing huge radiator with a smaller one

I have a huge 1950 x 500 old double radiator in my dining room which is currently being converted into a kitchen/diner - the room is now about 6.4 x 5 metres and calculated btu required is around 6500 (I know this isn't probably exact). I want to replace the rad with a smaller one, probably a...

Why do I have power/current through my aerial cable?

Hi, I'm a bit confused, have just been tidying up some aerial cabling whilst doing some work in my house and whilst connecting it up with an electric test screwdriver I noticed it suddenly lighting up! I appear to have a current in the cable - the cable is a link which goes from where my...

    New kitchen layout wiring/sockets/oven advice

Cheers folks - I have had a new CU fitted prior to having new kitchen ring installed so cooker radial is now on a 40amp radial, in 10mm cable, accepting ColJack's point that if the oven is wired direct into a cooker outlet there is no fusing down at all.

    New kitchen layout wiring/sockets/oven advice

Thanks for reply - I did have a browse around and found many posts advising people to connect ovens direct to a socket, to be honest I'd rather have in a similar set-up as it is now with dedicated circuit but it's more work. As for appliances - my washer, dryer and dishwasher are all plugged...
