Wired New Light and Switch Not Working

Yeah I figured the true sparkies would tell me to get a multimeter :) Its one thing I've always meant to pick up when im out but always slips my mind, I'll definately get one this week to check this if I can't fix it. I do agree they give out alot of light but as our garage is soon to be...

Wired New Light and Switch Not Working

Well my garage is connected to the house (via a door to the kitchen) and isnt really a garage, more a storage room until I do the garage conversion in the new year (My project is in the Projects section of this forum). The lights in the garage are on the same circuit as the main house lights...

Wired New Light and Switch Not Working

Hey there, I've recently taken the old tube lights down from the garage and bought a replacement standard light socket and switch, along with some mains lighting 1mm2 twin and earth cable. I wired up the light socket as I always have (it was the same way the back of the packet suggests) and...

A switch that's purpose is unknown

Cheers for your help guys! This site has been great so far! I've posted three or four things and they've all been solved with in a day :) The door to the right is the bedroom, but the bathroom is opposite so that seems like a logical answer :) I think I will take your advice and leave it...

A switch that's purpose is unknown

Oops! I wonder why theres nothing connected. I have economy 7 heating which is up and running. We did have a storage heater which i took off and removed, but I didnt touch that switch prior to removing the heater. So theres power going to the switch, but nothing connected after that?

A switch that's purpose is unknown

I'm slowly going through my new house room by room, updating and renovating various areas and I've come across a switch that seems to do nothing. Admittedly I dont expect any one to log on and say 'Its for your this, or that!' hehe :) The switch has only been turned on for the photo...

    Garage Conversion Project

Hey guys, In the next few months or so this will be the next major DIY job on the cards now that the kitchen has been ripped out and fitted/decorated. I am lucky enough to have a brother who is an architect who came over to measure the house on the weekend to draw up the plans and contact the...

    Whats this in the loft...?

Hey guys, After fixing my hot water issues with my immersion heater, I ventured into the loft upstairs in my new house only to find this; I've not removed the insulating covers yet, but just wondered if anyone could pass judgement as to what it is. I assume its something to do with the...

Thanks for your help, I'm a bit new when it comes to things like that! Glad you cleared that up for me though, and glad that my hot water is back :)

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

Ah I see, thanks. I will get the photos for you as soon as I get back home. I know our consumer unit is VERY out dated. Since we have moved in I have been in the process of updating and decorating the house (including knocking through to the garage to put in a door). The consumer unit/heating...

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

Hey, sorry, what exactly would you like a photo of? As far as the economy 7 water heating goes, thats all that seems to be there, the Horstmann Economy 7 timer, and the cylinder with the immersion heater on. Cheers.

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

Hey, thanks for your response. That is the way it was set up when I moved in a late last year. I've never had an immersion heater before, or economy 7 for that matter and didnt realise that there should be a seperate heater for each dial. Is this a bad thing? The house is fairly small and...

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

Actually, taking the thermostat out and clicking the reset button seems to have worked! The boiler is warm and there's hot water coming out of the taps! Hoorah! I've set the off peak times for tomorrow morning at 3-8 so fingers crossed! Cheers.

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

Cheers for all of your help, this is my first time posting on a DIY forum and its been really helpful. I think B&Q have the replacement thermostats, as well as the Incolloy immersion heaters, complete with thermostat. I'll probably pick up both just incase! Thanks again John, Joe.

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

I tried pressing the reset button on the thermostat on the immersion heater but that didnt seem to work. Do you know where I could pick up a replacement thermostat? I checked on screwfix.com and the replacement immersion heaters themselves are only £16.99. Cheers, Joe.

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

I'm not really sure why its blue, I moved into the house about 6months ago see. Ah right, whats the overheat stat? I looked at the top of the immersion heater (under the metal cap) and there is the thermostat control, with a reset option. Is that it? Joe.

Economy 7 Suddenly No Hot Water

Hey, Thanks for your reply. I dont have a multimeter to hand at the moment. I will be testing it shortly however. If the power is getting to the immersion heater, will that mean that I need to replace the heater? On the other hand, I am assuming that if the power is not getting to the...
