    old firewall needs a sledgehammer

After changing ISP my firewall is refusing access to the new dialup number. This is Norton's 2000 version and I get the error message from the dialup - 'dialplan update unavailable'. How do I configure the firewall to accept the new dialer software? There doesn't seem to be anyway of tinkering...

    Worst ISP in the world

Yes you knew it was BT before you even checked this message out. Probably because I'm lazy I'm still with BT but a recent half day on the phone to several incomprehensible Indian gentlemen just to transfer my dial up to a new computer has made me question my sanity. I now have BT-Yahoo...

    "blemish" problem

Yes well remembered - spot on got rid of the thing and killed it dead. Many thanks for that Igorian. This made me take stock of another couple of 'blemish' problems. One which maybe difficult to solve and the second one I have more hope for: Many moons ago I installed some software from...

    DAB radio

According to the BBC coverage data - my area is only "quite likely" to receive satisfactory digital reception. However my local HIFI shop says this only really refers to portable sets and a good hifi unit with a ribbon aerial can be set up to receive with far better results. Is this really...

    metal switch no earth

I'd like to fit a brass light switch but there is no earth wire present in the exisitng plastic fitting. Is there any easy way to get around this? I think I know what you're are going to say. I can hear the sharp intakes of breath. Cheers Steve

    Log burning stove

The species of wood used is critical - never burn softwoods as these will coat your liner with all kinds of tarry resins. Ash is best for heat output and longevity of burn. Oak is good but needs at least a year to dry out. Birch is excellent and can be burned straight away (in the green)...

    geothermal

Thanks everybody for all your info on this. I've just started researching it but a common figure quoted for the kind of area you would need for your heat source is about 1.2 square metres of ground source (horizontal system) for every square metre of floor space to be warmed. Figures for the...

    geothermal

yes it was the heat pump I was interested in - works like a reverse refrigeration unit so only needs a few degrees temp diffeence. Saw a guy on Grand Designs installing one on a converted church in Ireland. I believe it works best as underfloor heating rather than radiators? Steve

    solar pump

Can anyone out there recommend a reliable solar powered pump - I intend to power a small fountain perhaps 2 metres or so above a small (half oak barrel) so the water only needs to be pumped up to the water feature and then trickle back to the barrel? I am keen to minimise the use of...
