No Earth cable in orginal ring circuit flex

My fuse board has a sticker on it that says "this installation is connected to a PME system". Googling this I found: Is this why the cables I have don't contain three wires? I'm still going to check the resistance tomorrow, though.

No Earth cable in orginal ring circuit flex

Okay, you lost me here. Ohms measure resistance. I know that. I do have a meter and have used it to measure resistance before. Just not clear on what you mean by "earth pins", "socket earths" and the "main earth bar". I do have metal conduits for the ring. I'm not sure how tight the...

No Earth cable in orginal ring circuit flex

I can't see the colour of the cores on this socket, but on other sockets it is copper and a solid cable. There is a ground cable in every socket. But it only connects between the face plate and the socket box. It's not part of the ring. This ground cable, though, I can see. It's copper...

Spur has switch FCU, but makes no sense

I've no idea what the previous owners were thinking. Perhaps they wanted the socket moved over just a foot and couldn't do this without breaking regs (ie. wiring diagonally). So, they added a switch where the old socket was and then ran a short spur from there to the desired new location.

No Earth cable in orginal ring circuit flex

It appears I've made some errors in terminology. Apologies. Here's what's going on. No. It's cable. I only just now learned the diff between flex and cable. Per my answer above, I have actually purchased Pirelli 2.5mm(squared) solid twin & earth cable. That's why I'm here. Now...

what screed/cement to use for 3 inch gap

I have a gap in a cement floor where we've chiselled out the concrete to get to heating pipes that were embedded in the concrete. Now I have a gap in the floor about 4" wide and 3" deep and about 3 feet long. I got some quick dry cement at Robert Dyas, mixed to the best of my ability and...

Spur has switch FCU, but makes no sense

I'm looking to add some spurs to my existing ring circuit and am following part P. It looks like the previous owner converted a socket on the ring to a switched FCU, then ran a spur from that FCU to a double socket. I want to convert the FCU back to a double socket, and run a spur from...

No Earth cable in orginal ring circuit flex

Inspecting sockets in my flat, I notice that the original flex is only two cables (red and black). No earth. I'm adding some spurs and my new 25mm flex has three cables (red, black, green-yellow). Should I be concerned?

new bath, no holes for taps

I just got back from bathstore.com yesterday and was looking at steel tubs. The salesman told me that you should get them pre-drilled if at all possible unless you wanted the taps mounted on the wall. He said that plumbers aren't usually going to drill into a steel tub. I'd call a plumber...

Number of sockets to a fuse in a consumer unit

Cooker (on its own fuse) Water Pump Washing machine (no dryer) Planning to connect an immersion heater on a separate fuse. Other than that, it's basic stuff... computers, tv, radio, alarm clocks, lamps, printer, I don't even own a tv or video equipment.

    Regs re Cables in Walls

Can you define "large chases"? I had already done the work by the time I found this response. I don't think mine are large enough. but I'll use a drill to enlarge it at this point. My chases are about 15mm wide and go about 20mm deep into the wall. There was so many different...

Number of sockets to a fuse in a consumer unit

Yup. That's exactly it. Thanks. I have this in another thread. the CU is mounted in what I think is called a mantel unit. Since the ceiling and floor are both cement, conduits are all embedded in it. The mains come in through a large conduit in the ceiling concealed within a wall. This...

Number of sockets to a fuse in a consumer unit

I have room for 6 fuses. But only three are in use. thanks for all the info. I am NOT doing anything in the kitchen, but I am planning to add some double sockets as spurs to the ring. I know that I cannot add a spur to a spur, so that's fine. I also got some great advice regarding where...

Number of sockets to a fuse in a consumer unit

I've discovered that for my 1 bedroom flat, there are only three functioning fuses in my existing consumer unit: 1 for the lights 1 for the cooker 1 for EVERYTHING ELSE I'm planning to add about 8 new double sockets and replace about 6 singles with doubles. Questions are: Should I be...

    metal or wood door frames?

I want to get my interior doors and frames replaced. They are old, chipped, painted over 1000 times and they just need to go. A contractor suggested I get metal frames to replace them instead of wood. I'm not sure whether or not I should get metal or wood frames. This is for my flat in...

    Regs re Cables in Walls

Ahh... I see what you mean. Used 'Ban-all-sheds's link and there's a great diagram there. Dang... I could do this myself! I'll rent a chasing tool. hehe.

    Regs re Cables in Walls

Guess what! You got it!! Cement floors and ceilings baby!!! This project is becoming very frustrating. Ban-all-sheds has a good point. The guy who came over though was actually pretty cool. Disappointed he couldn't do any work. Another poster mentioned chasing at the top of the wall...

    Stupid question... PME and RCD

This may be a stupid question. Can you replace an old consumer unit with one that has an RCD if you currently have a PME? Was wondering if PME may cause the RCD to trip often due to earth leakage.
